British Rower rescued by Japanese CG.

It appears that a British single handler rower attempting to cross the Pacific has been rescued by the Japanese after enduring heavy storms and seas, and another is awaiting rescue.

Why didn't they scuttle the boat,or bring it aboard?

I would want to quit after suffering repeated capsizes too. Interesting that photos showing "rescue" there are not even any white caps to be seen. More a case of sick-and-tired rather than being in any immediate danger?

It is a different kind of sport. They are not cruising.

Reading the account--one repeatedly rolled, the other one rolled and pitch-poled--makes me wonder if a properly sized drogue would have helped keep the rowboats more stabilized, to the extent they could have ridden it out.

The boat looks like it might fare OK if held stern to the waves...

I think the drogue is the answer, attached to a bridle.
One end of the bridle to the boat, the other to a BIG tree in your yard.

I think they normally use drogues. Can't say if they used one in this case, but it IS the 'weapon of choice'.

I believe the storm was a real bad one. Big storm, small boat, passive tactics, BIG trouble. The same applies to small sailing boats, but we at least may have the choice. The guy in a rowing boat just hides in the aft cabin (drogue out) and, well, 'prays'.
