Yes I now have crew,my girlfriend is joining me.She has done Vic./Maui before and knows how to rough it.I think I will get south of Columbia then decide to stay in or out. When I sailed down with my folks we stopped EVERY night, cause my dad wanted a good nights sleep. We had no radar or GPS,never had a problem.Turns out he was'nt an ocean sailor as when we left Yelapa for Hawaii,he was terribly seasick for entire crossing to Hilo.Honolulu was his last sailing stop ever. They flew home,I sailed boat home to Indian Arm,(Deep Cove)He sold boat, that was it.I have radar, 3 gps's,AIS,latest Navionics charts,DSC VHF,and A.P.

Good for you guys! it should be an amazing trip!! We may be doing the same trip again in Sep...not sure if we are going then or waiting and then just shooting straight for Hawaii in May, as our goal is to get back to the South Pacific.

Enjoy the west coast and Mex... awesome crusising - great people!!
Tune into Don Anderson on the SSB nets for daily weather... you can find his stations and times if you google Don Anderson "Summer Passage"
He is the weather guru of the west coast seas and quite a character.

Best regards.

I would go with SSB unless you have lots of $$$ although the Iridium is good for a safety back up...the SSB is one of my favorite tools on the boat in many - many ways and almost every cruiser has one - just a note. great way to communticate with each other.

Weather patterns and stuff

Between California and Hawaiʻi it is possible for tropical depressions during August and September, and even a slight risk in October. On the other hand, the weather down the coast is best in July/early August, although the Pacific high can make the favorable wind belt a bit narrower and there's over-all an increase in calms. I suppose one could noodle down the coast in July/August and hang out in San Francisco for a month or more before jumping off to Hawaiʻi.

I plan on putting the boat on the hard in
Hawaiʻi, flying home, then coming back in winter/spring and doing some work on the boat having made some decisions about where the boat is going to go next. Most likely that will be back north to BC, but maybe not.

The time has come to hoist the anchor and make the southbound trek.Feeling prepared and ready for the challenge.Plan on departing Juan de Fuca around the 5th. of Aug.,the 180 hr. forecast looks favorable to me,as well as the current,if anybody thinks otherwise ,I would like to hear from you.Plan on going out about 80 miles, till Cape Blanco then decide to stay out or go inshore.Should get clearer picture of weather later this week, will be Gulf Is. bound till then.

We're planning to depart Newport, Oregon next Saturday, southbound also, but staying inshore and harbor-hopping. We'll look for you further south. Fair winds!

We were planning on doing the HaHa last year, but couldn't make it. Will be sailing south from San Francisco Bay towards the end of September. Is anyone planning on bringing kids with them? I will have my twelve year old son and thirteen year old daughter.

Dang it!!!

I gotta stay here for another winter. Anyone want to buy a nice newly re-modeled 16 yo house? Private community w/ marina and park & stuff on Puget Sound...
Next spring I will be off to ALaska. Then late July early august down to link up with the Haha. I really wish I was going this year...
Have a great sail and cruise. Fair Winds and good fishing.

Jim,
Maybe we should trade houses? Looks like we won't get out of here this fall either -- waiting on getting our Edmonds view rambler sold. I'm counting on it being sold by spring and heading North before we head South.

Long Beach, Panama, Bora Bora, Hawaii

... and points in between.

Greetings All,

I have booked my flight out of Hawaii to prep my boat in Long Beach. I will be sailing back to Hawaii the long way. The plan is to tag along with the BajaHaHa flotilla to regain my sea legs, brush up on old skills and polish some new ones. I'll coastal south from there until the window opens for the Marquesas.

I'll be lookin' for you out there.

Other direction

We're near the top of the island, just pulled into Port McNeil.

Good luck, Highseas! Things will sort themselves out. BTW, Bamfield, Ucluelet, and Tofino are mighty fine places to wait out the weather changes, and have decent restaurants (and wifi.)
