We wont be going this year, but the plan would be to be in NG about August, summer through Kavieng and then across through FSM or go north past Japan, Eleutians, Canada (BC) and then south along the West coast USA.

Very loose plan.

If you go through the Aleutians, make sure it is June or July, otherwise you don't want to be there.

Thanks for this. Our plans are far too loose at this stage but that is one of the plans we are looking at. We might just like the Louisiades too much and hover about the tropics for a year or 2.

Its all good as long as it happens. SOme work on the boat, cruising kitty replenished, kid does well enough at school etc etc. Most radical changes to plans have been due to external causes (other family members needing us for something or me breaking something important on the boat)

wouldn't going east through the aleutians and then south along the canadian coast be against the prevailing weather?

bjarthur- no. The current runs down BC well into California. The problem is the weather- the wind and the currents support Japan to BC for most of the year, if your boat can take it.

haven't done it from oz, but have from n.z.

we're wimps. we prefer the tropics... and would avoid the narrow windows in the north pacific. assuming you can find windows to island hop windward to tonga... it's not a bad ride from there up thru samoa & fanning to hawaii, with the last timed at or after nov 1 to avoid tropical storms. spend a few months in hawaii, then push off for the west coast in late spring (april or later).
