Antipodean Boats heading to Hobart for the 2015 Wooden Boat Festival ?

Hey Guys
Wee Barkie a 1977 Colin Archer carvel cutter designed By Wilf OKell and build by Bruce McKay in Bundaberg Queensland , has just received her confirmation as an entry in the WBF.
We will be departing the Tweed River thesecond week of January 2015.
Any others thinking of attending or simply cruising to Tassie.?

G'Day Tom,

As you know, Insatiable II will be heading that way barring the usual calamities. We'll be a bit earlier (I hope), 'cause we'd like to be there for Christmas in Port Cygnet.

Glad that they confirmed your entry, and we look forward to meeting up somewhere on the island.

But watch out for Wotname... he's a rascal!

I have always had Lord Howe Is on my bucket list.
What do you think my chances are of having a reasonable sail from Hobart to Lord Howe Is the end of February. Wee Barkie is capable of 100 -110 kn mile runs noon to noon in fair conditions. I would probably be looking at a
nine day passage weather window. Cheers Tom

I'd go up the coast to Sydney/Port Macquarie and then look for a 3-4 day window across rather than relying on a 9 day forecast.

I guess that could always be an option, or after heading out in the general direction of Lord Howe and finding unfavourable winds.
Might just have to dig out Ocean Passages of the world and find out what the predicted winds are in February for that area, Cheers Tom

Tom,

You could ride the westerlies east till you got far enough to fetch it on starboard tack in the easterlies.. If you have a way of receiving the Hi Seas forecasts by HF radio, you could keep track of where the easterlies begin, so you could sort of plan your moves, or if you have satphone, you can get the data via that. You should still expect a frontal passage every 3 or 4 days or so.

Thanks Ann I was hoping to hear from you, since you are familiar with Hobart weather and surrounds.
Riding the westerlies sounds good, and looking at the sailing directions currents I might just have to point Wee Barkies bow toward Norfolk Is .Thereby trying to avoid the Australian east coast current, hopefully pick up the easterly current two days out and encounter the easterlies far enough north in order to lay Lord Howe Is on a starboard tack.

Also looking at the old sailing routes of the World the Sydney to San Francisco route curved northerly between Rarotonga and Tahiti , I think a well found SV should be able to fetch Bora Bora without to many dramas. Cheers Tom

Unfortunately Wee Barkie's East Coast adventure to Hobart has had to be cancelled. Not to worry WB is fine, its her owner that has the barkie with a healthy dose of pneumonia although I am recovering if painfully slow. Cest la vie. Cheers Tom
