Advice needed - sailing in N of New Zealand

Hi everyone,

I will come to NZ for sailing in autumn, it means in spring... november/december 2013, it's a part of my around the world trip.

I want to go from Auckland to Bay of Islands and I have 11 days. It's enough to sail and see fiew nice places.
My question is: is it reasonable to go to the Parengarenga Harbour? Or too dangerous?
I think that sands can move during tides - on the map it looks OK but...

Second question is what do you recomend to see in this area?
What pilot book do you recomend?

Thanks for your advice.
Regards
Jan

Re: Advice needed - sailing in N of New Zealand

Hi Jan,
Given you have 10 days and given the uncertain weather in NZ, I think getting to Parengarenga is optimistic. We have never been to Parengarenga but have heard it is very shallow with large tides, and not recommended. Given your time frame, I'd recommend Auckland, Kawau Island, Whangarei Heads or Tutukaka, Whangamumu Harbour, Bay of Islands and Whangaroa Harbour (this is spectacular, don't miss it). Even then it will be a fast trip. If you have extra time, I'd spend it in the Bay of Islands, Mokohinau and Cavalli Islands, and Great Barrier Island, all worth a visit.
Cheers,
Jill

Thank you very much for your answer. I will go there only if we will have a good weather conditions and a lot of time.

Best Regards
Jan

All the suggestions from yachtdaemon are excellent...enough for a couple of months! The guides that cover the area are:
NEW ZEALAND'S NORTHLAND By David Thatcher. NEW ZEALAND'S HAURAKI By David Thatcher.
Are you planning to check in and out at Auckland? You could check in there if you want, then sail around the north and end at Opua where you could check out. At least this makes it mostly a one way trip.

Personally there is a good chance getting screwed weather wise. I assume you are chartering from Westhaven? Well before Xmas is still pretty off season, maybe check a long range forecast (not very accurate there but look for big Tasman lows) before you plunk down cash. There will surely be boats available on short notice.

Re: Advice needed - sailing in N of New Zealand

I'll second the thanks on that list of destinations - very useful, thank you!

Can anyone advise what the sailing conditions are like in Auckland in October? We're thinking of coming out to charter then but concerned it may be a little too early in Spring.

Thanks
Geoff

October will be a lottery. Typically still unsettled.

Re: Advice needed - sailing in N of New Zealand

Equinoctial gales can be quite vigorous throughout October

The Hauraki Gulf region has a reputation with NZ sailors from other regions of being a bit of a soft touch, a light-winds venue.

It wasn't until I'd spent some time sailing there I realised it was a kiwi piss-take. (translation: largely without merit)

The list from yachtdaemon covers most of the high points, I reckon.
