| 10/07/09 - Another powerful quake rattles South Pacific Magnitude 7.8 temblor strikes near volcanic island chain of Vanuatu Breaking News NBC, msnbc.com and news services updated 33 minutes ago A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Thursday in the South Pacific northwest of Vanuatu, triggering a tsunami warning for several countries in the Pacific, the U.S. Geological Survey  said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The epicenter was located 232 miles north-northwest of Santo, Vanuatu's largest island, at a depth of 20.5 miles, the agency said.
