Yeah, I griped about the marina we are in now, because a 40' slip w/electric, shower, wifi is $40 and for a 47' boat (us) it's $60. Rent is cheap here! Our current slip is $275 a month (floating) plus electricity. We are 5 minutes from the Gulf.

They didn't seem to like cruising boats - hanging washing etc.
Mostly high-end motor boats - small and large. Mostly with underwater decorative lights...Very few sailing boats these days.
made me feel like a vagrant...

Re: Your choice for the worst price gouging transient marina

It's no shock that miami's expensive, every major yachtie city is. Go 5 or 10 miles outta town and prices get cheaper. Plenty of places that are reasonable, compared to the high dollar mega yacht marinas. Key West has a $9.00 a foot resort and I just don't go there. I don't buy that marinas need to get top dollar to stay in business, I think they price according to what sort of customer they want. Cruisers who get 30 gallons of diesel and use every service (trash, water, wifi, laundry) and are tight with the cash, might not be a huge revenue source.

Re: Your choice for the worst price gouging transient marina

The only marina I remember ever staying at in the Caribe was in St Thomas (red hook) for 3 days while my engine was removed and overhauled.... That was 10 years ago and didnt seem too bad priced. I dont do marinas. There are a lot of mooring rip offs for sure. I would guess if you found a deal and reserved you could stay in a hotel in Victoria for the $100 a night!

The advent of IGY in the area was not a positive development for boaters.
I was just about to point out a similar thing in New England that occurred in the 80's and 90's. An outfit called Brewer's bought up a lot of marina's in Long Island Sound and nearby, spiffed them up a bit and and increased prices. I think that is the single biggest reason marina prices around here, especially for transients, are so high.

Re: Your choice for the worst price gouging transient marina

One of the most costly Marinas in Florida is the Galleon Resort Marina in Key West. Currently $4.50 per ft/day plus $15.00/day for electricity and $10.00/day for WiFi. With tax that comes to $230.05 per day for our First 42. By comparison, a 2 bedroom "apartment" at the resort is only $180/night (plus, of course, sales and hotel tax). We used to stop at the Galleon annually but when they broke the $3.00/foot level, we gave it up.

FWIW...

Marina at Atlantis in Nassau: minimum $4/foot with 50 foot minimum. But the stay there does get all of your crew free day passes to Atlantis water park. These passes are, if I remember correctly, either $120 or $160 per person.

There was also some marina in Sint Maarten that was either $5 or $7 per foot with 50 foot minimum. Don't remember the name as decided that would never need it

Palm Island Marina in Englewood, FL. $120/night for my 27' sailboat. Not even a great area. Told them no thanks and spent the night on the hook about a half mile down further along the ICW.
