Your boat's name

I am going to be getting a new boat here in the next year or so and I am trying to come up with some names, what are some of your watercraft's names?

Ps I'm looking at a Cape Dory 40.

Re: Your boat's name

Darla, Eclipse, Southerly, Kamome, Katydid, Snow Star, Echo, and Minke. Echo and Minke are the only two I chose--we inherited the others with the boats. I like short, one-word names that are easy to pronounce and are clear over the radio. Echo was really perfect for all that, but Minke fails a bit on the easy to understand over the radio. You will regret choosing a name you have to explain to everyone you meet, or that you always have to spell out over the radio because nobody understands what you are saying.

And please avoid these.

Re: Your boat's name

The complete story of our boat name is on our blog. In short, we named our boat after my grandmother because she was very influential in my love for the sea. Her nickname was "Smitty", short for her last name Smith.

One key thing to think about when naming your boat is what it will sound like if you ever have to call in a mayday. You don't want your name to seem too cute or funny and be a distraction then. Even just making radio calls to marinas, harbor masters, other boaters, fiends, etc. Typically you are saying the name of the boat three times in a row.

Don't forget to do a proper renaming ceremony. You don't want to offend the gods.

Fair winds,

Jesse

Re: Your boat's name

There is a boat on my dock named "inoui".
I always thought that was very clever as it is the same upside down.

But you never said backwards. You said upside down, which is true.

Whatever name you pick make it easy to understand on the radio. You dont want it to be misunderstood and have to spell it out all the time.

Re: Your boat's name

Kettlewell has it correct: a one word name that is easy to understand, and please, not IV Play. It's not cute and you'll definitely have the single women who spot it thinking "compensation" (and wondering if shore side you drive a corvette)

What would be extremely lovely is if you'd actually paint the name on the boat (fore and aft) in plain font large enough to be easily seen!

Mine's called Seaweed 'cause she sort of grows on you. She's not sleek and fast, and, well, the name suited me. There are lists online with boat names -- however note that the common names "Voyager" and "Wind Catcher" come to mind, well, in a crowded anchorage you'd want a name that is unique to you for VHF calls and such.

One of the best I saw was on a center console; it was called "Job Site" and, well, it just tickled me. Every time I saw it there were a couple fellows aboard with fishing gear, hard at work no doubt.

Enjoy your Dory...

But, yeah, gotta agree with you, Kettlewell. Why would you choose the same name as a thousand other boats out there?

Not just single women. I think that about a lot of the boat names that I see. And then I have to feel a little sorry for the poor, pathetic guys.
