Not like the countless mile-long drift nets that are already out there, unmonitored, unlit, untracked, and unretrieved, floating around for years killing everything that gets tangled in them, eh? They're not fun to come across at night in a boat either.

Harsh words...
There's been a long discussion here about the pros and cons. It's neither your money nor yours-as-a-taxpayer money that is being used in this commendable effort to do someting about the pollution.

What was your contribution today, or this year, or last year?

100% recycling here and a net 0 carbon footprint . But that's just due to how I was raised .
( frugal)
as an aside that unit has never worked except to catch a couple tons of old fishing nets . ( ghost nets)

I have kept a watch over it from the beginning.

Edit: in a way it does involve my money .
I own stock in a couple of the companies listed as partners .
Then there is the whole 501C part as well

That is highly commendable! Unfortunately, millions of others don't strive for that, for many different reasons.

And because it doesn't work straight away we should give up and roll over? I'm sure there were/are many other ideas by "smart" people of how to clean the oceans, but that's all, "ideas". This young fellow is actually doing something about it, and whatever publicity he gets can help raise awareness, a little bit at a time.

If it turns out the whole thing can never work, then, hopefully, they got an insight into what else might work instead.

Re: You Don't Want to Hit This!

Consider this, a lot of the “globalization” has bee to off shore our production to India, China, and elsewhere. Part of the financial argument for doing that is lower wages, but also lower environmental standards. We found companies were using child labor at extremely low pay rates. Likewise if we look we will find that they are dumping trash; not only in the manufacturing process but from the cities.

So one way to improve this disasterous situation is to bring that manufacturing home. It would create more jobs here but also make the products much more expensive. If we put sanctions on the manufacutrersnts clean up heir mess we’ll the cost would still go up without having the jobs.

Perhaps the best plase to start would be Walmart. Public pressure could for e them to institute a “Made in the USA program” or baring that to send inspectors to assure the factories are handling wage products properly.

As for consumer disposable trash, maybe we should start buying the waste plastic bottles and styrofoam containers from them. Give them some profit incentive to clean it up. In many ways we would be just buying back our own trash because if we didn’t export our factories they would not have the wealth to pitch their bottles.

I’m sure this is a wildly unpopular idea. Feel free to criticize and come up with better ideas.
