I should also mention that coconut milk is best for seasick prevention. Not as good as staying on dry land but close

No offense taken but its actually about safety at sea. Its called sharing which I'm pretty sure this whole website is about.

I doubt I have ever clicked the blog link in someones sig. His post might save someones life regardless of it being a link to his blog.

If it's about sharing and safety, lose the drama.

Safety is about avoiding drama, not bolding it and putting it in italics.

I have never looked at a stranger's blog, either.

And I just wrote to a pen pal to practice man overboard drills.

So I guess I'd have to say I am in favor of man overboard drills, rather than frightening the heck out of one's guests. Additionally, we always appoint a "pointer" if there are more than two guests aboard.

Last I heard as long as you don't break the usual forum rules of foul language etc then he can basically start a thread on whatever sailing topic he likes.

My wife took a basic sailing class (using Sunfishes I recall) and one night they did "man overboard" drills. They dropped 10 floating cushions in the water and she proudly told me she was able to pick up 7! I asked if I was one of the 7. ;>)

Don't fall overboard.

When we are sailing, we stay in the cockpit. If one of us needs to leave the cockpit (to pee off the stern maybe) we alert the other to confirm that they have returned. We often wear our teathers. We ALWAYS wear our PFDs.

This one takes the day. The whole point of the exercise is to keep people on the boat where they belong. So what your saying is like...I don't make my kids wear seat belts because I know and practice first aid. :0)

What I disagree with about this is that one often takes guests for daysails, and often land-based people are unaccustomed to boat motion, so that a slight bobble can make them lose their balance. Also, kids sometimes forget "one hand for the boat, always". I do not advocate waiting for the "first aid" stage, just being prepared for such a situation should it develop. I'm more, "wear the seat belt, but know first aid, too."

As the under-skipper on my boat, I feel reassured by practicing recovery of floating cushions, reminds me I can still do it. YMMV, but I think it is one of many essential skills.

Of course, we all know it is better not to fall off the boat, no argument there.

By the way, have you ever considered the paperwork hassles if you did lose someone overboard and fail to recover them?

We are always having our hats blow off our heads when sailing. We try never to leave one behind. Every time a hat blows into the water it becomes a man overboard drill.

We've always done this because we figure it is more realistic than planning a drill where everyone knows what's coming and are getting into place and waiting for the cushion or whatever to be thrown over. It happens spontaneously, like the real thing would. And for us, for some reason, it seems to happen at least once a season. Maybe we need better fitting hats.
