Unhappy Yanmar Instruments Don't Work

Hi All
My yot is fitted with a 4LH-HTE YANMAR .
I wish I had bit the bullet and bought a Yanmar panel, but times are tight for a pauper fitting out his boat to go cruising and I'm trying to make do with what was fitted by the last owner.
Can anyone out there assist me in figuring out why none of my VDO instruments work -(apart from the lights going on on and the temp, rev counter, oil pressure gauges going "open circuit")? I've fitted a new earth cable from the Yanmar to the steel hull, but still no instruments register and all the sensors can't possibly be shot?
Many Thanks
TMC

Re: Yanmar instruments don't work

would consider hotwiring one at a time. My temp guage recently went haywire read maxed out. was kinda weird cause it climbed slowly like it was getting hot.
After replacing the sender and guage with same result I hotwired and subsequently found a break in the insulation of the wire and moisture combined were giving false readings. Was all for the better in end also ended up replacing alarm switch that had broken terminal which is probably more important than the guage.

Re: Yanmar Instruments Don't Work

Forgive me if you already know this, On my first steel boat I had a real learning curve with electricity. First a steel boat is not a car and you should not use the steel hull as a common ground. You should use a floating ground with two wires going to each circuit a positive and a negative insulated wire. with the negatives returning to a common buss bar. This is a simplistic explanation. But it sounds like you have grounding issues. But don't we all

Re: Yanmar Instruments Don't Work

i have a yanmar 3jh2te and old type c panel, i have been told that the switches and sensors and the wires are crucial due to Ohms and all that. ie they all have to be yanmar. so a yanmar panel appears to be essential.
