If I hated the name....yes. I'm not superstitious except when it comes to how I treat the ocean.

I would have difficulty finding one virgin in Shanghai

Would you change your boats name?
Yes," BrendaJ" will change to "Unattached" if Brenda does not accompany me on 2-3 year planned cruise.

If your "sail" boat was named "Snapper Catcher", wouldn't you be inclined to change it?

LMAO. Even my fiance got a good laugh at that one. It's early in the poll but it seems changing the name is not as taboo as it once was. Thanks for participating and enlightening me to the modern ways!

If you can't stand the current name then go ahead and change it. Usually a boat's history is attached to its name so if you mention "Velera Linda" folks will remember their sightings and the crew that was aboard and whether or not the vessel's skipper had good manners.
If you change the name then that's all you'll be giving up. I've seen a lot of names out there that I would change in a microsecond and have no qualms about doing it. "Waterbed," "Wet Dreams" and "Passing Wind" come to mind.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Even in times of old, a vessels name could be changed with the correct ceremony and offerings to the Gods of the Seas. These ceremonies go back to the times of the Greek City States.

When we first got our boat it was named "Lazy Susan" Right away we started calling it Knottybuoyz II and everything was going wrong. Systems were failing and we changed out alot of parts that first year. The 2nd year we fixed alot of the stuff that had somehow been missed the year before. We had scrapped the name off the stern, but no official ceremony. Finally we did it. We invited family and friends to participate (and drew a crowd at the marina) and did the official renaming ceremony, complete with flowers and chamnpaign donation to Poseidon. After that Knottybuoyz seemed happier. No more nasty surprises every time we took it out and everything was finally working. Would we do the ceremony again? Absolutely! Anytime we name a boat it will be done. Of course the Captain hates to give the whole bottle of Champaign to Poseidon but I give him the lot...no need to temp fate.

Yes, but the question is what the correct ceremony is. I'm fairly certain the ancient Greeks didn’t have champagne. A friend of mine said to do so one has to sail backwards for a nautical mile. And I was trying to find a humorous article I read about a guy who changed his boat’s name and the ceremony consisted of having a virgin piss of the bow. He had his two sons do it.
Personally, if it was that big of a deal, I would insist the previous boat owner changed the name both legally and in accordance with will of Neptune so as not to induce his wrath. Not that the Greek gods were well known for following contract law.

My boats name when I got it was Anne Marie. Now I use to know a Anne Marie so the name had to go. I've removed the name from the boat and got a new key ring because the name Anne Marie was also on that. I am changing the name to Scheherazade I got the boat sign a couple of months back and as soon as it gets warmer it goes on.

Thank you, I even told my daughter Courtney that she should be thankful that I thought of Courtney first before Scheherazade.

If you've noticed my posts, I have a name for my boat and no boat yet! So yes - I'll be changing the name.
So what kind of ceremony is appropriate. I'm not sure I'm too keen on sailing backward or having a kid piss off my bow. Perhaps get an old salt to say a few word on behalf of the boat so the winds are kind to her? I'm not keen on smashing a bottle of champagne either - I'm sure it would end in cracked fiberglass! Maybe a bottle popped open and poured over the bow?
