Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
That is the question . If you can see and smell mold in many different places, would you knowingly buy a 10 year old boat?
Would you feel comfortable knowing you could eradicate the mold? (assume on all cushions, bedding, ceilings and maybe even behind some panels)
If yes, what percentage discount seems reasonable for doing all the work and replacing all needed items?

Just did and it's 30 years old. A good cleaning, some febreeze and tea tree power https://www.forespar.com/ttpower/ will go a long way.

I would. I would not base the offered price on your preception of mold issues, as the sellers perception is probably pretty different.

Re: Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
Every boat has mold. It’s a question of how much. Every boat on the market will sell at a discount. It’s a question of how much. Hmmm.

If you are unwilling to face mold, I would suggest pursuing a different hobby. No sarcasm intended, boats live in the water. Chotu summed it up nicely.
Yes, you can keep a dry boat and you can eradicate mold. My has boat was very dry, with dusty bilges. But mold it is always just around the corner, if something gets wet and is not dried promptly.
This is the most effective product I have found.
Sail Delmarva: Mildew Treatment for Pennies
That, and running a dehumidifier.

Re: Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
The mold would make me wonder about leaks and the probability of having to take things apart to find them (like headliners).
I don't have any mold in my boat, despite being in the humid tropics and often closed up for weeks at a time. I simply don't have any leaks and the 5 Dorade vents keep the air circulating. I don't believe that mold is inevitable in boats. If I were you, I'd want to figure out why the boat has mold before purchasing. I might be something simple to remedy, but often it's a big job tracking down all the leaks. A friend had a mold problem and he had to rip his boat apart before finally discovering a small caprail leak that managed to travel around behind the headliner and exit far from the actual source.

Re: Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
As others have said, mold is present on just about all boats. That being said, I, personally, would walk away if the whole boat is gray and fuzzy from one end to the other.
We bought a boat from someone who we knew and who was well-known through the marina as always working on his boat and always cleaning it. The reputation was that the boat was very clean. We spent many hours on it and even pulled the engine room floor panels to confirm the bilges were dry and near-spotless. However, there was mold in the anchor locker, inside the cabinets under the helm station, and in the lazerette. Wasn't a big job to eradicate it and is now part of our regular maintenance to stay on top of it.
Bottom line, determine your own willingness to spend time getting rid of the mold. it may involve replacing cushions, curtains, bed linens and mattresses, and you may have to remove some panels to clean behind them. If you're good with that and everything else on the boat is favorable, go for it!

Re: Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
Really need to define the level of moldiness.
As mentioned, there is mold in every boat (even those who claim they don't have any).
On hard surfaces, it wouldn't concern me much as it's pretty easy to remove. If you start talking about significant amounts on cushions, carpets and other soft surfaces...much more difficult to eliminate.

Re: Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
"Moldy" means to me that tiny mold "spots" can be seen on every surface in the complete boat!?
This means that there is a HEAVY attack on your health, living in this environment.
you MUST remove the mold and you need to stop it from growing.
I bought such a boat knowingly for very cheap.
what I did:
a) remove everything from the inside! I mean everything! strip the hull completely naked.
b) drench the hull in hydrogen peroxide. not with 1 liter 3% peroxide from the pharmacy. but 50 or 100 liters of 10% solution at least from the next chemical production plant. cost are a few dollar by doing so only!
c) drench all the stuff you removed from the boat as well.
d) let everything dry. the peroxid will vanish completely.
c) paint averything you can paint with mold killer paint
(you need to "fix" the dead mold as it can still make you sick.)
d) throw away all you can. put in new carpets etc.
e) rebuild the boat.
f) enjoy a "new" boat for very very few money.
.. in my opinion a VERY HEAVY moldy boat will sell at 50-70% discount. it can cause severe health damage if not treated and treating is a lot of work.
in other words - a heavy molded boat is almost worthless. you buy the "package" of technical equipment an will get the boat for free.

In this case I’d think it may be warrantied too.
Only thing that would give me pause is mold may indicate also the state of maintenance, so check that well.
I fought mold a couple of years ago when the Wife didn’t want to leave until after Christmas, this stuff is a miracle worker, nothing else I have found, Clorox / vinegar really works, and stinks to high heaven and is destructive, especially Clorox, but this stiff isn’t.
Apparently is Sodium Carbonate, not Sodium Bicarbonate, but it’s as odorless etc as water, but it does in fact both stop mold, and if sprayed on surfaces that aren’t moldy, it will prevent mold.
You can rent a fogger and just go to town and it will get it all.

Re: Would you buy a Moldy boat at a discount?
The mold phobia is just another manifestation of the "everything is trying to kill me and I'm afraid" syndrome. Yes, a few people are very sensitive to mold but most are just very sensitive to the hype. It's practically impossible to eliminate mold where there's a moist atmosphere. Does that sound familiar to all of us boat owners. Hit the surfaces with a mildewcide like bleach on a regular basis, take steps to get good airflow through the boat, fix leaks, and enjoy the boat. If you can't live with your fear of mold might want to find another hobby like photographing cactus.
