Worst Conditions Blue Water Boat

35-51 ft heavy displacement cruiser with an appropriately split rig--ketch or schooner. safe and solid and good in bad weather without beating the sailors to death.
been out in severe elcetrical storms in a seidelmann sloop of 37 ft--of florida--those are not adequately solid. also have much much weather helm. not fun in a storming situation in a daysailing sloop.

We recently purchased a Tayana 37, moving up from a Vancouver 27.

We love the heavier Tayana. I have to admit, though, I see no advantage to it when out alone in heavy weather.

The Vancouver is an easier boat to handle alone, simple and quick to secure loose bits and deploy the series drogue, seal and lock the companionway hatch to guard against boarding waves, then go below to sleep.

Only reason Jedi has a Sundeer is he's height dis-advantaged... in an H22 he'd have to bend over sitting down..

Although one has never been built ( as I have found out from talking to designer's group office ), I would say the Robert Harris Design, Vancouver 50, a cutter with full keel and dual centerboards. The boat seems to have been well thought out for all conditions. You can find the basic plans in Danny Greene's, " Cruising Sailboat Kinetics." And if you build one, you can incorporate all the fine suggestions of your fellow cruisers here!

But it does not hurt to chuck out options for the struggling masses..
they might want to do a 'Jester'

I'd span a third of it's LOA

but I've been on even smaller boats

Worst conditions situations...there isn't a pleasure boat out there that will allow drinking of cocktails while the boat takes care of the rest...just doesn't happen that way out at sea. I have been in some very rough conditions on VERY large vessels...to the point where lifeboats were being washed off the underside of the 1092' flight deck...Hint Hint....It wasn't fun and the boat sure needed constant attention....

with that said....a Westsail 32 sailed herself after crew was taken off during the Perfect Storm.....so who really knows....anything can happen out there...anything! So we will never find the perfect boat built for the worst conditions....but it fun talking about it

You mean there is no ideal boat for the worst conditions? Gosh, who would have guessed that! seriously, I think you agree with my picture of the ideal boat for it and like you, I also think it doesn't exist. I just tried to show how to determine which one does better than the other one, i.e. when it is rougher, the boat is less suited.

I am not going to make any boat suggestions, but I'm much more interested in the best boat for good/normal conditions. That is where I plan to spend most of my time sailing.

While not worst conditions, my money is on drinks, dinner, and desert being served on S/V Jedi in Force 8 conditions.

You think so? I think they are designed for optimum sales figures and any heavy weather suitability is there only because it was assumed beneficial for sales of the product.
Not that I can come up with something that is designed for it because I don't think it exists, no market for it.
