WOW! That would be scary to see (on any size ship).

As many sailors know, a true tidal wave will usually appear very low when at sea, and only becomes higher when it reaches the shallow water near shores. In contrast, the seas mentioned in the article are found out in the open ocean.

Steady,

That wave was not the only thing wrong with that movie....

I was on an aircraft carrier at that time between two super typhoons has a wave that actually swept the flight deck which is well over 60 ft above the waterline.
Never had a worry that we would survive just worried about the damage that we would suffer. I was the guy that ordered the man we lost out to secure a weapons system that had suffered damage .

Re: World Record Wave

That accurately-measured 62' wave would have been reported as over 100' by most observers on a boat in the same seas. Visual estimates of wave height from a boat are notoriously exaggerated, as discovered by William Froude in 1861. He found that no matter how your boat is situated on a large swell, what you feel to be “straight down” is actually at right angles to the wave. So when you think you’re looking out on a level line to judge a wave, you are actually looking on an angle, distorting your judgment.

Well while I agree with you on the observation distortion bit.
When you have solid water on the 011 level on a carrier ( that's 13 stories above the lwl of the ship ) I would tend to believe what the quartermaster was reporting to us snipes in engineering and damage control. Them waves were damn big.

Re: World Record Wave

The significant wave height is not the height of ONE wave, but a weighted average of the highest one third of measured waves over a period of time. There will be waves of considerably greater height fairly often, and occasionally up to twice the sig wave height.

So, them's big waves for sure, for sure!

Re: World Record Wave

I'd be curious to know what the wavelength and/or period was.

I just read the article and looked at all the pictures. The artical was quite clear in showing the parameters of the wave measurement and the pictures where clearly labeled as where the charts explaining the location of the wave sensor. I can't see any reason to be upset with this article.
This was a fact based fun news story ,and not important enough to go beaking off on journalistic standards.
Big wave though

Re: World Record Wave

For the nerds, more details here:

https://wmo.asu.edu/content/World-Highest-Wave-Buoy

including the fact that there was a maximum wave height reading of 27 meters around that time with winds a bit over 40 knots.

(Sorry Don, no period or length given)

Re: World Record Wave

While looking for the facts I came across several other news reports. Every one led with the same incorrect statement that this was a single measured wave. .

Re: World Record Wave

Why is a record wave recorded in February of 2013 just now being reported by the general media?

This article was amended on 13 December 2016 to correct the height of a double-decker bus. It is 4.4m, not 15m.

It's not just The Guardian that is reporting The Wave; there are dozens of news outlets reporting it.
