The problem with your theory, at least in Santa Barbara, is most of the billionaires are already members!!

The first boat I lived on was at a marina where there were no gates. I used to love people coming by and asking questions and I miss it now. In those days, (30 years ago) they were a hell of a lot politer too. I've never had anyone set foot on my boat back then. They'd come strolling along, perhaps walk down the finger for a look at the cockpit and I'd be sitting there nursing a beer and reading. Conversation started, and half the time it ended up with two new kids or a young couple working the lines and figuring out how to hoist sail as we headed out for a couple hours of impromptu lessons. Once we got out far enough to allow for the dipsy doodles of a virgin at the helm, I'd hand over the tiller and sit back and instruct.

It was the same thing to walk the yard in spring and summer. I got to know the intimate details of a lot of boats that way, and now find that while I'm working on SD that having visitors from among the new members is a hoot. A lot of the new members are social and don't have boats. So if they come up and want to get greasy, I'll take them on any time. I liken it to passing down the lore to the new generation.

I figure I probably turned a hundred or so onto sailing over the years. Some of them I've met over the years, now with their own boats, and its been a reward all on its own. I sometimes think its the one useful thing I've done over the years. God knows the stuff I do for a living ain't.

As for the new gated docks. I find that if I want to dock walk at PC Marina, I just go up to someone and ask. It generally works unless the person is a snob.

Well done, Sabrekai!

We've had similar experiences over the years, especially when in foreign ports. Met a hell of a lot of nice folks, became friends with many, never had one take advantage of us.

We all started out as newbies, and having someone take the time to educate us a bit was really encouraging to us way back when. We like to pass it on when we can.

I just dropped by a marina that was associated with a yacht brokerage.

If I wanted to see the inside of a boat I just stopped in front of it for a few minutes until a salesman rushed over to see if I wanted it.

Having just walked a locked dock. I found just asking if I could look at a particular boat as someone opened the gate worked just fine. As long as you don't touch anything, most people don't mind looking. Also if I asked an owner questions, most were happy to provide a tour of their "home" even offering a detailed view of engine room, etc...

Generally, I show up in my worst mis-matched gym short and t-shirt with holes, pushing a shopping cart with green garbage bags full of "stuff" and a crescent wrench out of my back pocket and a weeks growth on my face.
