Windy.com. Wow!!

Is anyone using windy.com??

I just discovered this site and app. Makes it possible for us to easily do our own weather routing. Wow. Just wow!

https://www.windy.com/

PS:. I'm not associated with this site. It just seems like an amazing tool.

Yep, it's been my first go-to for weather forecasting for years. Make sure you thoroughly check out all of the different layers available.

Another been using it for years. The app is hit and miss but the website works well. Fastseas.com uses it for weather routing.

I like that it defaults to ECMWF which is better and higher resolution than GFS. Most websites just use GFS since it's free. There is option of other models and a comparison of models if required.

Re: Windy.com. Wow!!

Windy also includes a Hurricane Tracker. Here is Tropical Storm Dorian moving across the Caribbean with the Previous Track logged as well as the Accumulated Wind Layer indicating the Expected Future Track.

It's possible to switch between ECMWF and GFS Models however in this case the expected track forecasts are very similar.

I also turned on Reported Wind to display actual data from weather stations, and hovered over St Maarten Airport to display a popup with more info.

Loads of people, including me...you're a little late to the party. [emoji6]

Definately best of class for data visualization. A feature I particularly like is the ability to set the altitude (using a slider no less) of the wind data...very handy for visualizing upper level winds (way better than trying to piece together a mental image from various upper level wind charts).

The fact that it has access to the ECMWF model (which many other tools do not) is a big bonus. It also has access to many other models too.

Re: Windy.com. Wow!!

I also made a post here http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post2963220 about how to use Windy's "Observation vs Forecast" feature: https://community.windy.com/topic/75...orecast?page=1

If you are not sure which Model is giving the best results for your location this feature enables you to compare what a "Weather Station Observed" with what the various "Forecast Models Predicted" over the last few days.

Thanks @jmh2002 I've been using windy for 3 years now and hadn't noticed the hurricane feature. Used it hourly during Irma and now Dorian.

Null earth is fun to watch too - especially when you handle the toggles at bottom left. You can see where the Stream was a few days back.

You're welcome. They have been rolling out a lot of new features during the last 6 months so it's been difficult to keep up to date.

Tricky as so much is personal preferences. Though for actually getting at the mass of data available then, imho, windy wins hands down. Ship reports, actual against forecast, every parameter and altitude data available etc etc.. Predictwind is a bit of a differebt product. Luckily you're allowed to look at both
Does windy use the new gfs though - anyone know?
