Why Own a Boat

Two weekends ago we sailed into Malaysia from Singapore. We had decent winds and a favorable tide.

Everyone was having a good time when someone spotted dolphins off the beam. Now for the carribean cruisers this is probably common but for us "dirty port" sailors it's a bit rare.

The crew (wives and kids) were compeletely excited even though we didn't get closer than about 100 meters. Pictures don't do it justice but there were two grey and one pink lazily broaching riding the ebb tide.

Funny how the admiral didn't even talk about boat costs for the next week or so ;-)

sunset, whales, dolphins, unique vessels , the approaching foreign shore, all the things we love to see when out on the sea.

Lets go Sailing

There is no rational argument for owning a boat. It is exactly as you have noted: a viceral experience deep rooted in our psyche, linking us perhaps to those wonderful creatures that play in the sea from which we arose. It is a freedom that even though maybe not manifested, sits waiting patiently at the docks for only us to decide when it will be released. Happy to hear you are out there sailing and experiencing the irrational!

Where in Malaysia did you go. We used to dive the islands out of Mersing and had some great boat trips up the east coast.

What will take you farther then you wanted to go?
What will cost you more then you wanted to spend?
And what will keep you longer then to wanted to stay?

The answer is suppose to be sin, but I think boats qualify.

It was a short weekend trip from Changi sailing club to Sebana Cove Marina. 12-15 sea miles or about 10 as the crow flies.

We were going to do Tioman this year but are running late so are probably going to do Langkawi and Pinang up the Malacca Strait in November-December.

Why do we own boats? To get to the other side....in a slow yet dignified manner.

I saw a couple porpoises inside the SF Bay last summer. Very cool and extremely rare. I see humpbacks and greys inside the SF Bay more often.
