Some folk forget the world is bigger than the US... hell I've even met folk who think Beneteau's are an American boat...

Are they expensive for what you get for your money? Depends on what you are comparing them to. Compared to a vacation condo at the beach ... I think not. Compared to a set of golf clubs and some greens fees ... probably yes. You can't answer the question until you decide the alternative.

Yachts can be pretty expensivish - you pay for a luxury good after all - the quality, the status, etc..

On the other hand, second hand sailing boats tend to be quite well priced today.

So, since you are looking to buy your first boat, do not worry about yacht prices yet.

Re: Why is it so expensive for yachts

boats cost money.
folks who own em pay a lot of money to keep them up
many folks who own em dont remember there is other than retail plus 400 percent...
folks are like sheep--they have to have newest and bestest whatevers, as good as or better than their neighbors stuff
....even tho newest isnt always bestest....
research and price items before purchase...you will be surprised at what you will find.....down to your basic cruising sailboat.....

The Bavaria shipyard is the single, largest yacht production facility in the world with 650 employees, (and a few robots) capable of delivering over 3,500 boats per year to new owners worldwide. All Bavaria yachts are produced to order which enables wider customisation of individual yachts and more flexible ownership options.
That's from the Bavaria website. Not sure if it is true, but that gives you some idea that even the very largest sailboat companies don't churn out that many boats, and even these very large companies have a lot of man hours put into each vessel.

(it actually makes financial sense to sell if you are not keeping the boat for another 5 years or so - there is a reason why older is cheaper!).

Dropping down a few years in age will mean also dropping down a few feet in size, but IMO as you are starting out (and basically want to go sailing rather than boat fixing / fiddling around!) that a worthwhile compromise.

If you stick to the mainstream brands (sold in the UK - even if they are French etc!) will likely have no great problems selling in a few years time once you have decided (from own experiance) what you actually want in your boat. or simply decide that getting cold, wet, tired and occassionally scared not as much fun as it is cracked up to be!
Hoping to keep long term as plan is to go back to the Med to get sailing
time under my belt before adventuring further afield.....

I'm Shocked. 3,500 is not a lot world wide. I think they need a salesman like me...

Exactly.

Over last 10 years we saved over 50k over the land based lifestyle. Some 35k if you allow for our rtw.

Freedom has its price too though. Not many would like to live 10 years in a condo ;-)))))

Do you not think boats/yachts are like houses and the price hasn't bottomed out yet. Or maybe it has. ???
