Re: Why...

I can see having a radar repeater below deck.

Back in the old days radar was also used for determining position by taking ranges off of land masses. Having a repeater at the chart table made sense.

Also on some boats like catamarans with remote steering stations, you don't have to stand your entire watch at the steering station. Why stay out there at the radar when you can come inside the cabin and stay warm, watch the repeater and still look out the windows. Not all boats are built like caves.

Well yes, the best set up is slave units. The best best is slave unbits and below deck driving! Just like put puts.. Sailed a Wauquiez 43 from MDR to Anacortes and loved the below deck ability to drive and see very well.

Re: Why...

We have always had Pilot House boats, and always had stuff inside. Also we have never had the NEW stuff ! LOL We thought we were up town when we got a North Star loran Chart Plotter !! LOL ( Connie even has a puter nav set up now) So i under why folks have kept things below decks, cus they just don't last in the weather!! But the stuff now stands up to water well ! but nothing will last for ever in the good old sun !! thats the only thing I can see that might hurt this new stuff !! We can't really afford the new stuff as yet but we always found our way around so far, so we will stick with our old but working stuff in the pilot house!

Re: Why...

My units are both in the cabin and at the wheel.
