Thanks for the added insight, Dan. I still don't buy the argument that he didn't see the surfers before he reach the point of no return, but that's just speculation. I gather though that although the channel south of the pier is used frequently by local sailors, it's not marked, it's narrow and it's dangerous - if one chooses to flaunt the danger
for whatever thrill it provides, or whatever time it shaves off the trip, then he better have his head
in the game
. Fortunately it didn't this time, but 'complacency kills'.
