Exactly, they may have been hit by a submarine. If the container is not identified, it does not count.

The original ones were sealed and would float for a long time but they changed the design rules and they now have to have vent holes. If you look at the side of the container you will see areas which have a plate bridging the corrugation valleys in a couple of places on each side. Hidden under the plates is a perforated grate which allows water to flood them if they go into the sea. Since they are a high volume enclosure it takes a while.

I went to buy a couple of refrigerated containers once and asked whether the thick insulation would make them un-sinkable, the salesman said he did not know as he had never been asked the question before.
