Roverhi nailed it!
Fatigue is a HUGE problem for me behind the wheel
in any kind of swell. Why would anyone want to stand up in large seas? Yet you may need to hand steer if the auto pilot gets overwhelmed
I have never owned rack and pinion, but I would not recommend mechanical cable steering
. Dissimilar metals cause differential corrosion
and failure on the "pulleys" and the cables
snap and the most inopportune times, like just after you drop the mooring
; and they can be a pain to re-thread, plus you need to carry lots of spares and the overall system has too much play in it for my taste.
My tiller system on my 37 footer has never given me the smallest issue. To be fair. it is the heaviest built tiller set up I have ever come across.
