it may not be as bad as that!after re-reading it appears a new/refurb 71 bw unit is about $3000,and a rebuild $600-1200,plus freight and fitting

When I converted to electric propulsion I sold the dead Westerbeke 27 diesel for $500 and the working HBW 150 transmission for $700. No wonder the buyer jumped on it.

Speaking of ouch. Did you resolve the ant issue on board you mentioned in your blog? I had an invasion come under the kitchen door a year ago and used these:
Ant Problem? Terro = Ant Control Solutions
They were gone in three days and never returned.

chances are it is either the gear selector valve that has failed,
or the presure plate spring that depresses the clutch plates on the fwd side of the gear assembly.
