Which AC/DC fridge?

My Norcold finally bit the dust after 12 years. I have to say mine ran fine even though I have heard others had problems. Back to a new Norcold? or any other recommendations? Isotherm, Nova Kool, Summit? Thanks for any info.

Do you have a battery charger on the boat? If so, why not get a fridge that works on DC and run it off the battery charger when plugged in at the dock? Seems like that would open more options.

Seafrost, give Cleave a call. Just installed the BPxp DC system with Cleaves recommendation and couldnt be happier. They make great systems. Highly recommend.

The block head who butchered the boat before I bought it, cut out the plate fridge and freezer and put in a stand alone plug in fridge, so that it what I am replacing, but thanks.

Yes I know, I've owned a Norcold.

What I was trying to say, I guess not very well, you have a 12V DC battery setup on your boat. When you are at the dock connected to 110 AC power you still have the 12V DC batteries connected and probably a battery charger running off the 110V AC shore power to keep the batteries topped off.

In that case you will then have plenty of 12V DC so you could easily run a 12V DC refrigeration system and not have to have one that will also run on 110V AC.

This might allow you to consider a wider range of options for a new fridge.

We have NovaKool AC/DC fridges, and they work well.

Chris, Which Novakool model? Do you find the front load loses too much cool when the door is open? I'm considering the 3803 to hug the side and run off solar

RFS7501 and R2600.


We don't really notice any loss of cooling, but we do have to gradually crank the temps down as summer progresses (and the AC systems also have to do more work to cool the environment).


We do see some frost build-up over time. Frost-free models would be a nice touch, but I haven't shopped to see if anyone makes those in AC/DC...
