That users of a forum come... and go... is the nature of the beast. If they all stayed, there would be 17,000 people posting here every day.

Sean understandably took offense at a remark, and has decided that his time, for now, is better spent at other endeavors.

If he truly misses this community, he'll return. If not, I'm sure we can all wish him well. I know that all who have posted here for a while would agree that his contributions to this forum over the years have been considerable. I know he's brightened up my day on more than one occasion, and that I for one, will miss his smiley faces.

My experience on internet forums, since 1992, tend to show that those with high posts-per-day often consider themselves more knowledgable than other posters, WRT to the subject matter of the forum, even though they may have little to no real world experience. Mr Sullivan struck me as that type. I found much of his advice to be questionable and many of his posts made for his own validation and raison-d'etre. Now, I dont know the guy personally, and I could be wrong, but I have seen that pattern before on other forums.

This reinforced by his taken offence when someone simply questions his abilities such that he becomes very defensive (that final thread is a case-in-point).

The anonymity of the internet is a wonderful place to build yourself up into the person you wish yourself to be. When people start questioning, you can always run away.

The internet is what it is. Full experts, some true, some sockpuppets, but it can be impossible to know which from which.

But I can tell you that I am an expert on all things nautical, and I am sure you would believe me . Ahh but I dont have the 3.2 posts per day to back that up! Damn!

By the same token, to be a regular on a forum you need a pretty thick skin, or you might as well get off the internet now.

He'll be back, they always come back.

How gracious of you. In fact, you are as wrong as a person could be. The gentleman in question has owned many boats over the years and restored all of them. The work he did on his last monohull, a Gulfstar (45?), was incredible. The boat was a real gem and sold quickly.

I've been on his current boat, a Catalac 10M, and can tell you it's the finest example of it's kind in North America.

You owe this man an apology and perhaps you could have looked a little deeper before passing judgement like that. Who knows, one day you'll buy a boat which will need expertise in repairing her.

I didnt say he WAS. He struck me as someone who could be like that. Like I said, I dont know him personally, I am sure he is a nice guy. But, I have taken issue with a LOT of the advice he has given.

Owning a number of boats does not make one an authority on the subject (and I have met many who THINK they are). Nor does talking about a number of boats that you are "going" build (Lobster boat? Navy Barge? did he ever finish those?).

But why should you care? I am just another sockpuppet. I could rattle off all the boats I owned, repaired, and built and whatever experience I think relevant (like how Mr Sullivan does when he gets defensive) but convincing you is not important.

I do take issue with how he represents himself on his website. ABYC Trained? ABYC does not train technicians. "Considering" ABYC specs when doing a job does not make oneself "ABYC trained".

Lighten up people.

I haven't beenon in a while and these last two days have been my first 2 back, but to find that this madness is happening is apalling. I cant beleive that in roughly 3 months Cap. Sean could become so Po'ed at people on this forum. Mr. w42 you can beleive what you want but with Sean gone this forum has lost one of the most experianced people on it, the joke about looking for a forum in china was not funny at all. I may not be a moderator on this site and I may be kicked of for what I say next but if I am then i'll tell Sean why, but as a member of this forum I won't tolerate people judging those that they don't know, and I sure as H@!! don't think that we should be treating our most contributing and knowledgeable members like this, Moderators we look to you for guidence and as people with high standards for upholding the rules but when you break them then we won't trust you and we will dislike you, now that I have spoken if I am banned then it will be an honor but I want you all to remember what I have said.
