Where Is Bernard Moitessier's Last Boat, 'Tamata' ?

I just finished reading Tamata and the Alliance and I can't find any info on what happened to his last boat, does anyone have any information they can share?

I have also been looking for any plans for it, or even the designer/builders John and Ned Hutton of San Fransisco, to no avail. Any info on that stuff?

He's talking about Tamata, the boat Moitessier had after Joshua.

Re: Where is Bernard Moitessier's last boat, the Tamata?

I think I heard or read somewhere that the boat was on the hard in Raiatea or some place like that in French Polynesia, and that his last female companion (forget her name but it's in the book) owned it. But this is just a vague recollection ... hope it helps.

Re: Where is Bernard Moitessier's last boat, the Tamata?

Here are a couple references that confirm my recollection:

Raiatea 2007

Look at the 11th thumbnail down the page. This was in 2007

And on this webpage, the Aug 11 posting. I think this is 2003

If you are looking for the builders, put an add in the sailing rag LATITUDE 38. I believe the builders were from the San Francisco area and Lat38 is well read there. ___Grant.

Don't know if this is important to the OP, but Moitissier commented on Tamata to the effect that it was not a great boat, but better than no boat at all.

Resurrecting a very, very old thread here, which I know is a grevious faux-pas on any internet forum. Forgiveness requested in advance.

For anyone interested: it appears that Tamata was being prepared for re-launch in 2020, by Veronique Moitessier, after decades of sitting on the hard: https://www.sailblogs.com/member/tuproar/479448

Re: Where Is Bernard Moitessier's Last Boat, 'Tamata' ?

I'm researching John & Ned Hutton, steel boat builders from San Francisco. I'm a yacht broker in Anacortes, WA and have a steel 51' cutter built by the Huttons in 1973. Apparently it's a sistership to Tamata. I'm searching for any connections to info on these builders. Fascinated to learn more of the history of Bernard and his relationship with the Huttons and perhaps tie into the design scantlings of this boat I'm preparing to list for sale.

Moitessier may have been a great seaman but designed one fugly boat.

Re: Where Is Bernard Moitessier's Last Boat, 'Tamata' ?

mullysails: I was aboard Tamata with Bernard back in 80's when the boat was anchored in French Polynesia. No way was it 52ft long. More like 32 or 34. It was a heavy, typical multi-chine design, and Bernard wasn't very happy with its sailing qualities, but he got it cheap. Bernard and I shared a doobie or 3, and had a good chat. I had a "Joshua", built in the Meta yard, but one of only 5 with an aft cockpit (much better layout on a 40ft double ender).
