Where Can I Sail On a Traditional Old Sailboat ?

I seen on TV several years ago where you could pay X amount of dollars to become part of a crew on a antique sailboat...we are talking about wooden boat with square sails.....the size and type of Columbus. I have searched Google until my eyes are glazed over and I am unable to find where or who to contact for this. Does anyone have any idea? As displayed on TV, the crew worked the sails....the ropes.... swabbed the deck......and all sorts of manual labor.....which is great......I would love to sail on one of those very old ships.

Thanks

You could sail on the "Lady Washington" One of the first two American ships to explore the Pacific North West. This a replica of the Original. Built in Aberdeen Washington aroun 1989. She also starred in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
I've been on her three times before I moved to Louisiana.
You would enjoy her.
You may want to try a few of the tall ships to find the one that fits you best.

Welcome to the forum.

We're an international forum, so it might be a good idea to drop a few hints as to which continent you're on, the preferences for oceans you might want to sail, and so forth. One possible way to do this is to fill in your profile via the control panel.

Click on "User CP" on the upper left of your screen.

Be sure you know what you are getting into. It's bloody hard work on the old ones, particularly those of the early 19th and 18th centuries. There was a reason you rarely found sailors over 30-35 years old.

Good luck. I LOVE those old ships. They are my favorite to see in full sail gliding along the water.

the bounty also accepts sailors, but i dont know how to apply for position. many tallships in museums do accept hands. try your nearby maritime museum for details.

Re: Where Can I Sail On a Traditional Old Sailboat ?

"Aholes and Admials".....Early on aboard a school ship...every time a crew member would pass me...he/she would mutter that.

I took the first mate aside aand asked her what that was all about.

She asked if I was standing in the companion way.

I said yes.

Sme said the only people that stand in the comapnionway are aholes or admirals....

The Californian and the Hawaiian Cheiftan are 2 others that I've seen around.
Seems like they pull in to port, sell a bunch of tours, and head out a week later. I don't think that their crews make much money but it looks like a lot more fun than flipping burgers.

But, you'd probably have to be willing to leave the country, unless you only want to go for a leg.
