When Things Turn To Poop, and.....

When things turn to poop... and you don't know what you're doing. This video is for everyone who counts on weather forecasts to be 100% accurate. Many things are being done wrong, but I'm thankful these folks recorded it for others to learn.

I think it would have been quite a bold move to heave-to just off of that rocky lee shore in the background, no?

Hard to tell from the video, but of course would want ample sea room. Regardless I think it would have been a good time for the self obsessed crew to have ditched the selfie stick so they could be available to do something useful.

Absolutely agree!
Maybe the cameraman could have instead helped a little in that failed attempt to un-jam the jib furler?

Would have certainly been more useful.

Re: When Things Turn To Poop, and.....

Even though the skipper didn't appear to know what to do... as in furling the head sail, having the crew put on lifejackets much earlier and have everyone tethered to the boat.... he did appear to stay relatively calm behind the wheel. I'll give him that much. At several moments, it looked as though the boat was lying on it's side to the wind with the toe rail under water as the crew held onto the stanchions for dear life.

I think the video person most likely had a waterproof GoPro on his head.

That's what it looks like to me too. While we didn't see the cameraman do anything useful, I doubt we could have really expected him/her to help with the stuck furler without any experience.
Have you ever barked out an order to a newbie, then realized (by the blank look) that you failed to teach the basics? Guilty.

Re: When Things Turn To Poop, and.....

Hard to watch...

At least they had the main fairly reefed/furled already and the headsail somewhat partially furled before it got really heavy. Or maybe it was just a smaller headsail, hard to tell on the video. It wasn't out past 100% at least. It could have been much worse had they been caught out under full sails. So they had prepared to some degree before it really hit. Points for that. Reef early.

Seeing those people in that unprotected rear cockpit without much experience, tethers, or PFDs and the companionway wide open I was very concerned we'd be watching the boat get pooped and the cabin flooded. They got lucky that they did not get knocked down any worse/longer and take on any significant water.

For a minute there towards the end when that guy was climbing up the combing on the starboard side I was wondering if they had lost a crew overboard or something. My heart was in my mouth at that point.

Also, that lee shore really concerned me too. Treacherous position. Good thing things blew over as fast as they brewed up.

That's the thing about sailing the islands.. your going along sweetly in the shadow then suddenly the real wind hits.. the experienced will spot it well in time on the surface of the water ahead and adjust.. or go about and stay in the shadow.. the amateur will plough on regardless.. happy chatting instead of looking ahead.
AKA.. Acceleration Zones..
That scenario often happens in the Canaries as well.. the knockdown.

For a charter crew on holiday, they didn’t do so badly. Give em a break. Probably the first time 80 percent of them had been on a boat in over 30. Skipper kept his cool and minimal shouts. Didn’t understand pan-pan as they only had a torn headsail.

Likely to alert the CG there was a boat in trouble.. they were heeling badly in beam sea's and wind to where they were a hairs width from going over at times if the right wave hit them.
All it needed was the engine to fail and it would have been a Mayday..
From my viewpoint it was a good decision as rescue services would be put on standby and a primary position established.
Might be an idea if the owner put a sticky by the VHF showing the proper way to do it though.. that was chaotic and time wasting.
