I am with Capt. Bill (mostly because I like it the best!) A ship needs a tender, a boat doesn't.
'course, there's those pesky times when I get to pull up to a dock....

Having started in small boats I have a simpler definition..
If an 18' kayak fits on the foredeck, it is a yacht.
If an 18' kayak fits in the wheel house, it is a ship.
Just one person's opinion.

Does anyone really care about stacks?
Count the spreaders.
No more than 2 spreaders, it's a boat.
More than 2 and no more than 4 spreaders, it's a yacht.
More than 4 spreaders, it's a ship.

 I was aways told a ship carries boats ! So if your vessel will go aboard a Ship, ya have a boat ! just my 2 cents

Right now my boat is carrying two kayaks and a RIB. That doesn't make her a ship.

They're all boats.
Viz: I have a small boat which I keep on the deck of my big boat. My neighbour has a bigger boat than me. There are much bigger boats than that. Take the USS Enterprise as an example.
Now that's a f****n' big boat!
