Re: When Is A Boat A Boat, And When Does It Become A Ship?

And here is the Ensco DS6 offshore Angola. 6th Generation Ultra Deepwater Drill Ship. I worked on her for a year from rig up in Singapore to the first 3 completed production wells in Angola.

I was working for an oceanographic and hi-res survey company out of Massachusetts. I got around quite a bit.

CF seems to have a lot of merchant mariners.

Re: When Is A Boat A Boat, And When Does It Become A Ship?

As an old Navy guy I learned: Boats are vessels that can be carried aboard ships. The exception being submarines. Submarines are called boats but can carry other boats and planes. Boats cannot carry ships.

If you meet a vessel that could conceivably carry your boat it is a ship. If your vessel could conceivably be carried aboard any ship it is a boat.

Of course, there is a right definition, a wrong definition and the Navy definition.

She is a ship when you are negotiating charter rates and a boat when reviewing salaries...
