Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
I use Red, white and blue paint as in the USA no one can forget that order.
So one red, white and blue stripe every 50 feet. Then at 200' you go double red, 250' is double white, 300' is double blue etc. No one every has to go look at what length green or orange or yellow is at. 3 paint cans, easy to do and touch up also.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
One related question to this thread:
What method/tricks do you use to install/paint the markers on the rode at the desired intervals, without introducing any twist on the road that will mess it up?
Thank you!

Purchase 1-1/2 foot lengths of yellow polypropelene line. Weave each length into the links at 25’ intervals. Two if you like at 50’, three at 100’. Been using this system for a decade with a windlass. They last 4-5 years and have never fouled the windlass.

I have an old salt friend who swears by weaving a strand of polypropylene rope through a few links at intervals. He says it never comes out but is easily replaced and runs fine through his gypsy. Struck me as a cool idea but have not tried it.

I use a very similar system in 20' sections. I only use white paint, or any other light color, as dark colors are hard to see at night if you ever have to anchor at night.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
I live in a metric not imperial environment. Mark chain every 10 meters. Yellow plastic inserts. One at first 10, two inserts at 20 m and so on. All inserts yellow for simplicity of purchase and use.
If you paint your chain for marks, I would suggest using bright colours (e.g. white or yellow) to make marks easily visible in darkness.

Red -> Yellow -> Green -> Blue
1 red = 10 ft
1 yellow = 20 ft
1 green = 30 ft
1 blue = 40 ft
2 red = 50 ft
2 yellow = 60 ft
2 green = 70 ft
1 blue = 80 ft
3 red = 90 ft
3 yellow = 100 ft
3 green = 110 ft
3 blue = 120 ft
Anchor Line = 130 ft.

I've used this same system for a year now and it works well. Used to paint chain every 20' with a different color, but happy with these markers. Got them through Defender.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
Hmm. I am a new boat owner. I am about to do this to my rodes. I was wondering the same thing. I don't like the idea of having to count things, as I most certainly will lose track.
I was a stagehand in a previous life. There was a standard system for marking portable electrical cables for lighting, sound, etc. that was in use.
It went like this:
orange = 5ft
white = 10ft
red = 20ft
yellow=50ft
green = 75ft
blue = 100ft
other lengths would have combinations such as:
A 15 ft cable would have one orange band and one white band.
A 35 ft cable would have one red band and one white band.
A 150 ft cable would have one blue and one yellow band.
Once you are familiar with the code a quick glance would tell you what you were grabbing off the rack.
Thinking about anchor rode, the only problem with such a system is at night. Colors can be hard to see when it is dark, and they will change if you are using a red light. For instance my red Sta-Set furler line turns white (which I like) and my blue Sta-set main sheet turns black when I shine my red LED Petzl headlamp on them, because a red LED has a very few very specific wavelengths (colors) of light it actually is transmitting, while a white LED may include all the colors in it, or at least most.
So I am going to work on this for a while, but I will probably go with some system that does not make me count anything, but gives the info instantly, at a glance.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
Several of the paint markings systems seems to me overly complicated and not suited for guests onboard or for elderly sailors (like me) with memory issues ...

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
Paint.
Simple system with only two colors -- white and orange.
An orange mark every 10 meters (about 33').
A white mark every "shot" -- 30 meters (about 100')
So 10 meters -- 1 orange
20 meters -- 2 orange
30 meters -- 1 white
40 meters -- 1 white 1 orange
50 meters -- 1 white 2 orange
60 meters -- 2 white
etc.
Maximum numbers of marks for any section is 3. Only 2 colors. KISS.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
I have tried painting- came off too easily, especially in the Bahamas- one season and most of the paint came off. So, I went with the Imtra plastic marker inserts that Shrew mentions above. I came up with my own way of marking the chain that I find very easy to remember and easy to relay to crew...... Here is my system:
I use red, white and blue- in that order for 25, 50 and 75 feet of length.
Then I use green, yellow and red for 100, 200 and 300 feet (I have 300 feet of chain)
So- at 25 feet, I have 8 red inserts
at 50 feet I have 8 white inserts
at 75 feet I have 8 blue inserts
at 100 feet I have 8 greens
at 125 I have 4 green and 4 red
at 150 I have 4 green and 4 white
at 175 I have 4 green and 4 blue
at 200 feet I have 8 yellow
then I follow the same pattern as above for the 200+ marks using yellow instead of green
and I use 8 red markers just shy of 300 feet to let me know I am coming to the end of of my chain length. I figure I can easily discern between 25 feet and 300 feet of chain out.
I find it is very easy to relay to crew and very easy to remember. I have not lost any of the plastic inserts yet.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
Interesting about the portable cables, I need to do that for our stuff we use a few times a year.
Since I am a computer nerd, I was thinking along the same lines but with a binary type system:
(See photo, text spacing for a chart was not working out.)
Totals are: 1 mark 4 times. 2 marks 8 times, 3 marks 3 times, and 4 marks once. I have not tried this, just thinking out loud.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
I use multiple zip ties. At 30 feet one tie, at sixty two, etc up to four. Then I change color of ties. That way there is no counting necessary. Any ties I see can easily be converted to feet without seeing the previous ties. I usually drop anchor from the helm so with this method I don't need to see the markers go by - each one is unique. The ties do break after a year or two but are cheap as chips and easy to replace. Replacement is easy since most are multiples I don't loose track of position. Also, at 20 feet from the bitter end I place a tie every foot. Yes, the bitter end is tied to a strongpoint.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
We use zip ties. The order is Red, White, Blue every 25 feet. Easy to remember. Easy to apply. We double them at 100, 125, etc. We cruise the Pacific NW for 3-4 months every summer and always anchor out. We only replace one or so per year.

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
I dont find a reason to regularly Mark By the 5-10m, or 25ft a portion. Why?
Consider this:
1) The first 10-15m are a given(touch down)
2) we usually give out 35 to 50M (100-160ft) and that is the range you need precision for. Nowhere else.
3) Finally, ability to give bowman at anchor a CLEAR order is Paramount
4) Furthermore, i Mark the chain at windlass (plastic inserts) AFTER taking 4M (13ft) off. Thus, i calculate for a WET CHAIN LINE, not the chain on bow and deck.
I use Prime Numbers,
Red for 13m
Yellow for 17m
I may order 2Red for laying 26m, then l reverse, and then order 2yellow for 34m (minimum).
I lay down usually Either 3Red (39M or 130') OR 3Yellow (51m or 170'). Simple!
60M are marked By 2R+2Y (26+34=60m)
chain is 70M (240') then you see the rope (200')
l can have a monkey following my instructions

Re: What's your system for marking anchor chain depths?
As I learn in the Navy, 1 white painted link=10m, 2 white painted links=20m, etc.
Easy to read and simple to mantain
