What's This Noise?

Not a shrimp noise. Sort of a buzz or a "ermp" noise coming from under the boat. it is very brief and intermittent, repeating every few seconds to sometime a minute or more.

We just had the bottom scrubbed a few weeks back and only noticed this noise a couple days ago. Any thoughts?

Ermps are obviously hungry. Should never have started feeding them in the first place.

Re: What's This Noise?

Maybe the sound is from one of many types of noisy fish. "Drum" are among the loudest in Florida.

Re: What's This Noise?

Making note of interval timings with a stopwatch can show whether it really is random.

Disconnect all batteries & shore power and if it stops check individual items. Bilge pumps, level switches, gas detector, log impeller, depth transducer, ultrasonic antifouler - everything.

If you're moving or the water's moving maybe something's caught up on the hull and fluttering in the flow?

Something like a marble rolling around in the bilge?

I didn't even know there were noisy little fishies
Except the ones sizzling in my frying pan.

Hudson Force is probably correct. There are all types of "Drum" and are in the family Sciaenidae. They "drum" during the mating season Spotted sea trout are so loud in NC that you can hear them while walking the dock. They make the sound with their swim bladder.

Re: What's This Noise?

Over on Women Who Sail there is someone on St Simon's Island who hears a similar sound.

Tide where we are runs at maybe a knot and a half. Timing is pretty random. Sometimes every other couple seconds, sometimes might be a minute or two or more.

Always from the same spot forward to the keel, only thing there is the depth sounder but the power is switched off. Getting used to it so not a much of a concern as a mystery at this point.

Re: What's This Noise?

I had the same noise a few years ago. Took quite a while to track it down.

Turned out that it was actually coming from another boat in the marina that had "electronic anti-fouling". That boat moved on and my noises stopped.

Every now and then we get another "electronic anti-fouling" transient boat and I know it immediately.

Hope this helps.

Re: What's This Noise?

Are you sure it's not your mast and rigging vibrating?

Mine does this at times and it sounds like it is coming from deep under water

It would seem as though Hudson Force is correct. My wife found an audio recording online of a drum fish that matches the sound we are hearing pretty close. Sure is a horny bastard!
