What's that crackling sound I hear at night under the boat?
Some nights it's louder than others. It's hard to describe, but it's like a crackling or pebbles moving along the sea bed?

Re: What's that crackling sound I hear at night under the boat?
I remember a couple years back a lady was complaining about noise heard through the hull of her ship. She found out from some locals it was Pistol Shrimp -

Shrimp/prawns.
Simple way to scare them off is to drop the BBQ into the water...

Don't believe the shrimp thing. Polyestermites are chewing through your hull.

Re: What's that crackling sound I hear at night under the boat?
As mentioned, shrimp. Sometimes they are very loud, last year I swear they were on the hull, could have been since we had a bit of slime on it at the time, I think they were eating it.
As a diver, we hear shrimp making noises most dives. Jacques Cousteau called his first book and movie Silent World, a totally wrong name for anything underwater.

Radiolab recently made a wonderfully produced podcast about these little creatures. When you learn the whole story about them, it will blow your mind. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen. http://www.radiolab.org/story/bigger-bacon/

Re: What's that crackling sound I hear at night under the boat?
The first time we encountered this was at Miami Beach Marina in the 90's. We thought we had an electrical issue on the boat. It was mussels on the pilings. This is very common in some marinas. Good luck and safe sailing. P.S. They did, however, seem to have a decidedly Cuban rhythm.

Re: What's that crackling sound I hear at night under the boat?
When we were anchored in Hervey Bay, Qld which the humpbacks use as a nursery, our first night the dog was constantly running up on deck to bark as the noise of the whales singing was so loud through the hull.
He EVENTUALLY went to bed but wasn't a happy puppy.

Thanks for the link. We have heard these many times in our travels, and after the initial freak out we looked them up but the Radio Lab story is fascinating.
