This was on a fb post. They almost hit her at night. The sent position to CG and sailed on. 3 miles off shore.
1. Leave it, scuttle it.
2. Strip it.
It is abandoned.

I would do just what they did. Call the CG and report the position and details. I would also hover about for a while blowing my horn and see if anyone came up on deck or made an attempt to signal in any other way (could be someone injured below).

If it is truly abandoned, then perhaps CG will scuttle it because it is a navigation hazard. However, when it's that close to shore, there could be reefs and concerns about creating more debris/pollution to coastal areas, so it may be better (for the state) to tow it in and salvage it. California changed its laws recently to better and more quickly address dealing with abandoned vessels. They can be a real hazard. No matter, CG notification/Pan Pan seem like the best first things that should be done.

Coast guard marked it and left her to float. I just don't get leaving a vessel to drift, hazard to navigation. But I'm sure it's not out of laziness ( our coasties rock!), must be some policy from on high..

That much rigging and lines in the water make getting your vessel close, a risky proposition. If calm, maybe dinghy over. Not to scavenge really but if someone was rescued, there could be personal effects they might really appreciate getting back. But not the outboard, that covers shipping LOL 😝

I don't understand that either.

When a lost Dutch sailboat was found, they boarded it to make sure the missing skipper wasn't inside, took the personal belongings for the family, and sank her.

I often see reports of people abandoning ship, when said ship is still afloat and will probably stay afloat. Rarely do I read they sank it, seems the boats are usually left afloat.

Must be some policy like you said, but to me, it just doesn't make sense ...

If it could be done without risking my own boat / limbs:

Board it, look for personal effects that family (or the crew if they are back on land) might want back.

Then, sink it if I'm legally allowed to do so.
If to risky to board I probably can't sink it either, but I'd still want to and not just let her drift.

Anyway, the least you can do is report it, even if no action is taken.

I don't know about taking stuff, but I know opening a thru hull would sink her. If that's the case just let it all go-to the bottom.

The sailor's of yesterday always sank their boats when abandoning them . I don't know when the practice changed, but now a days it seems they are always out there floating as hazards to navigation and and everyone seems OK with it. Well I'm not.

There is a video on YouTube of someone finding an abandoned boat way out in the Gulf of Mexico - he did not board it - and a lot of people said he should have salvaged it.

I understand a menace to navigation, but 3 miles from shore - they don't say 3 miles from harbor - still I'd say take it in tow and hand it over to the authorities or claim salvage - not that the boat is worth much probably but you are removing a hazard.

Having this picture for a positive id and description, the boat's name and possibly hailing port, flying a Dutch flag ... you mean to tell me there is no way to trace an owner or owner's family? ... Why then do we bother to register our boats?

Couple of things to consider:

It is not a US vessel-it is Dutch & their salvage laws may be different.
If it's insured,the Ins.Co. has a claim on it.
If you take it in tow,you are responsible for it- pollution,docking,disposal,etc.

Best to get legal advice before you proceed or let US govt. look after it.

Definitely annoying & a danger. Perhaps call your politician(s).
I would want written permission from "US govt" before touching it-too many possible liabilities.
