What will we be sailing in 50 years

I was thinking, this forum, along with most others, seems to have a constant debate, can a production boat (Beneteau, bavaria etc) be sailed safely around the world, mono v Multi etc etc.

I don't want to have that debate at all.

From my observation, we seem to have very few "strong" world cruisers being made these days. Most of my Marina visits see wharf after wharf of new plastic fantastic boats. This is fine.

But in 20 years or 50 years the majority of the world cruisers will be gone, eg the formosa's, the Perry designs, Cheoy Lee, the camper and Nicholson etc, and those that remain will have been lovingly restored and beyond my $$.
So are we likely to be destined to sail a Beneteau etc because that is all that remains or are there modern "classics" still in production that in 20 - 50 years time I can afford?

Go down to the Ford dealership and see if you can buy a new 1960 Ford.

In 50 years aren't there going to be flying sailboats? Solar powered of course.

I think we will sailing the same basic mix of boats we do now, only the names will have changed.

Shouldn't we al have flying cars by now?
I imagine the hulls will be pretty much the same. The systems however will continue to evolve. Hopefully they become less complicated and easier to maintain.

50 years ago the hottest racing boats of the time were coming into their own. Fiberglass was just getting started... Now, those who actually believe you can't cruise in a modern boat, look for boats that were based on those 50 year old principals.

So my guess is 50 years from now, people will be cruising what is currently considered cutting edge in the racing world.

At least that's what I'm hoping for I can't wait to be cruising RTW in smaller version of one of these babies

I will still be sailing a 1975 Pearson 39 Yawl.
They are gonna bury me in that hull.

Folks will be sailing simulators in their living rooms due to private cruising having been effectively outlawed after the Pirate War of 2017 and the creation of "No Sail" zones imposed after the Universal International Free Trade Agreement of 2020.

I suppose by then Spithill & Coutts will be old enough to be running courses, "how to cruise around the world at 40 plus knots without flipping"

But seriously, will we, and who is building these boats?

I think we probably will have some form of solar but alas it won't fly!

In 20-50 years time there will be lots of new modern brands with superduper hightech designs and materials.

Cruising forums will be the same with the old farts bemoaning the good old days and going on about how things used to be made. The old farts will be lusting after old classic yachts like the Oceanis 393

Yes, and they'll rhuminate over the simplicity in a "small" 40 footers of the good 'ol days. Surely the status quo will be in the 100' range by then

Physics don't change, but our understanding and application of physics are constantly changing (although a bit slowly for my taste)

Maybe we will have larger (cruising) versions of these
