rofl..and there will still be female sailorettes without mates as the males will still like weaklings who dont sail-or do anything else requiring strength...LOL--and males will still try to teach by the holler method....

Just because I was stereotyping doesn't make it true!!!

But Zee.... you're probably right; us males and you females will probably not change much as a group, and that is a *good* thing! I like females to be just the way they are just fine. And if you know more about sailing then me (which you do), then I am grateful to learn from you.

In 50 years, we'll be waiting breathlessly for the revolution in battery and solar panel technology that will be, still, "just around the corner."

Haven't you heard the latest?
Now they say we're entering a mini Ice Age.
Glowbull Cooling is now all the rage... (sigh)

In 50 years, if I'm still sailing, it will be with a little help grinding the winches.
I'll be 135 years old.

Re: What will we be sailing in 50 years

In 50 years, I will only be 90 !

Maybe by then I will have convinced my admiral to go cruising.

Or perhaps they will have invented the ultimate cruising world where I escape in my pod and take a virtual cruise, a little like the holodeck off star trek!

And NO I am not changing your diapers at the raft up, but I will be there because I will be the only one of us that can make it to the bar without the need for an oxygen refill!

Re: What will we be sailing in 50 years

Super strong boats made from carbon fibre or much more likely, new nano string composite materials we have not yet heard of;
Sails, hull and decking coated with perpetual life solar cells;
Automatic variable geometry keels, sails, masts and rudders;
Automatic sail raising, lowering and trimming;
Powerful linear drive engines;
Fully automatic navigation and traffic separation;
All flowing from advances in aerospace engineering;
Sadly, all sailing will likely be controlled by the “Enforcement of Ocean Navigation” agencies based in New York, Shanghai and Brussels with the Brussels agency still being as all Brussels agencies are today, utterly and completely devoid of any form of intelligent life.
Enjoy your sailing freedoms while we still have them, the almost endless variety of the “Elf and Safety” brigades are constantly seeking ways to end our harmless sailing pleasures.
By the way, with all those advances in automatic safe sailing, We, the sailors of today, will no longer be required but then, unless there are remarkable advances in medical technologies, I won’t be around then so I’m not unduly worried…James

  • Many male sailors will still bitch that the Admiral does not want to sail with them.
IMHO only
IMHO will have become IMO... we'll all be such opinionated, cranky old bastards with so many sea miles that humble will be long gone

Zee, we just get a bit chippy when sailorettes who really know what they're doing contradict we mere males who just think we do...

That would put you at 85 now... you sure about that?
If you are, my apologies for questioning it and a deep respectful bow

Also, a few comments on where you thought cruising would be in 50 years when you were 35 would be really interesting!

If it was synapse meltdown... it happens to me all the time. Welcome to the club

Re: What will we be sailing in 50 years

I cant vouch for 35 years ago, i was 5 and rumour has it sailing on my dads 21ft steel thing that then sank when i was 8 (long story but oh well)

Grew up racing IOR boats so I assumed sailing was a perpetual bath, we just discovered Mylar for sails and if I remember correctly Spectra was just replacing wire halyards that used to rip the #@$# out of my hands.

We didnt have one but we heard of these things called Satnavs that were on all the gun boats, accurate to within 100m but only gave a lat and long, no such thing as a chartplotter

Production boats were all handmade

The future was wet, and hard to steer

Re: What will we be sailing in 50 years

If current trends are anything to go on boats will be bigger, cheaper, heavier and more complicated.
Everything will be electric and there will be more multihulls but there will still be more monohulls and people will still be arguing over which is better LOL!
