What will we be sailing in 50 years

50 years from now there will be no oil, and combustion engines for pleasure vehicles will have been outlawed. Our auxiliary engines will be electric and batteries will be lithium, charged by the flux capacitor mentioned in the previous post.

As a result of the complete economic collapse of the western world there will be few us or euro cruisers. The typical cruiser will be Chinese or Indian and US citizens will be reduced to polishing their flux capacitors.

Maybe Australia will get to make the wool, that is shipped to China to make the cloth that is shipped to the USA for the Americans to buy to clean the lens of the flux capacitor.

There will be even more pressure on cruising areas so the thin water will be more attractive. More mult's and hopefully more shallow draft mono's with swing-like keels like the Feeling, Southerly and Ovni's. Personally, I hoping for an economic collapse so that maybe I can buy an old Ovni one day.

Since I build my own, I'll be sailing whatever I can afford to build. I am currently building a 34' LOD gaff schooner that will come in under 12k in materials. On another front, as international wars increase [and they are increasing] more and more waters will be prohibited. And in terms of design, the sea does not change, so boats will have to be built to deal with the same ocean we've been dealing with for ten thousand years. The more 'modern' design, the higher the cost, so designs like mine tht are really hundreds of years old still work fine and are far, far cheaper to build. And there you have my 1.5 cents worth. [I can no longer afford the whole 2 cents.]

I cruised back in the early 80s and used to drool over boats that had Sat nav . Electronics will still be the big mover , by then no cruiser will put to sea if his sail shape indicator isnt working which is intergrated with his position indicator that displays his position on the fridge door of the rellies left back home , not to mention his weather predictor that will be 99% accurate for the next 10 days and we will all have video links - intergrated to the fridge door again and forward looking sonar will be the norm
And the adds for used boats will read - solid ex racing boat built in the first decade of the millinium - Has tradional kevlar sails and good solid carbon fibre spars and a now unprocurable all lead keel. - one for the purist

All of the brand new boats being built today and in the next 10 years will be the used cruisers 90% of folks will be able to afford and will be sailing. So what you see brand new now and in the next decade will be mostly what is out there in good, fair, and restored condition. There will be a small percentage of really cool, high tech, innovative boats owned by the wealthy.

So I guess the fidge door will be a very important home item, replacing the flat screen TV. Since we will be eating dehydrated poop as a steady diet the rest of the fidge may no longer be needed.

Sailing will be the only form of transpotation without engines and coast cities wil be like Venice since the global warming will have raised the sea level 50 plus feet. Welcome to Waterworld.

Assuming humanity hasn't been replaced by artificial intelligences by then (good luck with that) you'll probably be sailing a simulator which is indistinguishable from the real thing.
