What the hell is "expedition cruising" and what's the difference?

So here I am with this ideal of cruising. I'm sure my ideal will be changed dramatically when I actually start. I've always imagined far off places like Galapagos, NW Passage, Aukland Islands, Antarctica, etc.

Yes, I know, I have a LOT to learn and I'm probably naive.

For the record, I won't be jumping on a boat and heading to far off places. This will be something I have to build up to- working on other more experienced people's boats and taking classes.

Besides a boat se up for heavy weather, a hull that is stronger than the average fiberglass boat and self sufficiency needed to be in far off, unsupported places, what's the difference between regular cruising and "expedition" cruising?

That's it, takes a lot more money for fancier gear, and mitigating the higher risks going to more outlandish places.

Start with the basics, baby steps before blowing the whole shebang

You mention fiberglass, but what comes to mind for me when I think "expedition cruising yacht" is aluminum - like a Garcia, Ovni, etc.

Edit: To more completely answer your question - "Expedition cruising" to me means high latitude.

The op said a hull stronger than typical fiberglass

Expedition cruising involves deliberately going to places where you know you will have to wear a winter coat.

Not quite. The op said “a hull that is stronger than the average fiberglass boat”. Which I took to possibly include boats with a more heavily laid up fiberglass hull than “the average fiberglass boat”.

Fiberglass would not be my choice for cruising around sea ice.

Edit: I would also opt for a boat with a pilot house or at least a dog house.

Obviously no one objective definition, but to me implies "exploring" far off the beaten track, strongly built well equipped with technology and for self-sufficiency in primitive locations.

I would consider a boat traveling far up the Amazon to have earned the label, does not need to mean in icy waters.

Exactly, anywhere beyond easily available cold beer counts in my book and I'm claiming 'expedition cruising' for the Bahamas out islands?

Can it be "expedition" also if you already live there?

There are cruising grounds where you don’t have to wear a winter coat? .

What about urban exploring, say New York.

For 'expedition cruising' you need a 'blue water' boat......

Buggered if I know how I cope......

Re: What the hell is "expedition cruising" and what's the difference?

@Peregrine my target boat is an Ovni. Fiberglass is definitely NOT what I’d consider, but many people have gone all over the globe in fiberglass boats. There are a few Ovnis that have been retrofitted with dog houses.

@John61ct most definitely baby steps. If by fancier, you mean more robust and bulletproof, I agree. And some redundancy.

@mglonnro- Are you in really in Finland? And are you really a naked sailor? That kind of debunks the whole “anywhere you need a winter coat” theory. Sorry Jammer ; )
