If you click on "New Posts" after you have posted a message and before someone else has likewise responded it will not appear in the listing of threads/posts because, as far as your computer is concerned, it is not a new post. You have already seen it. If you click on the "Portal" tab, however, threads with the lastest posts, even your own, will be listed.

I am now putting this down to user error, rather than a plot. In a choice between a conspiracy and a stuff-up, a stuff-up is always more likely.
