What Percentage of Sailboat Owners are Racers? (poll)

I'm curious what percentage of sailboat owners do you think are racers vs cruisers? (poll question is what % are racers, so % of cruisers is 100% minus that, assuming we categorize everyone into one or the other)

Obviously many people do both, but let's say a racer is someone who bought their boat primarily for racing or primarily takes their boat out of the marina for races, and a cruiser is someone who primarily uses their boat to go places (while not being a participant in an organized race).

A few years ago I thought most sailboats were bought for cruising, and now I think more than I realized are bought for racing. Wondering what the actual numbers are though.

Do you want us to take our estimate at what the numbers are, or to indicate how we use our own boats?

Overall numbers (globally, or in your local region?). I think the ratio for just cruisersforum boat owners wouldn't be that interesting, since the ratio is very skewed here by the nature of the site.

It's an anecdotal estimate based on what you think (since as far as I know there's no survey data on this), but with enough poll responses anecdotal estimates can sometimes be accurate, or at least better than just my own anecdotal observations.

We split the difference -- we don't race our "home" .... i.e. our cruising sailboat, but we do race our one design 18' scow Y Flyer during the summers. My dream is to cruise, my husband lives to race... hence ... a split lifestyle ... 50% racing, 50% cruising ... CommuterCruiser.com. Both are good, after 15 years, I still prefer cruising ... and he still prefers racing.

Poor assumption

1. Many are both.

2. There's a large percentage of sailboat owners who are neither. I see a lot of sailboats sitting around that never leave the dock!

And then there's what you mean by "sailboat". Does that include everything from an Optimist up?

100% of the time at least 50% of all skippers are racers...whenever there's two boats within a mile of each other there's a race going on in at least one cockpit...
... and that's a scientific fact...

There's another category:

the idiots who buy boats and never use them.

They'd have an impossible task in answering your request.

StuM & I agree. It's all in the name, you see.

I believe it would also be interesting to see how frequently the folks who are polled actually use their boats (days/week or month). My unsupported impression is those who use their boats either strictly for racing or a combination of racing and recreation/cruising are some of the most active sailors with regard to time on the water. During the 60-plus years boating, I'm astounded by how many boats seem never to leave their slips.

I would say 100% if you are trying to pass.

Re: What Percentage of Sailboat Owners are Racers? (poll)

Marina del Rey has 5200 slips. Granted many of them are power boats but the majority are sailboats.

The CYC's summer beer can series is one of the most popular racing venues and I'd estimate total participation in all 8 classes to be somewhere between 60 and 80 boats.

Long Beach Shoreline + Alamitos Bay totals approximately 4000 slips with similar participation for the SBYC summer series.

You do the math...

And if the question is, "what percentage purchase a boat to use exclusively for racing?", my answer would be somewhere between 1% and infinitesimal.

True, certainly people do both. And some people do neither - the number of unused boats in my marina is astounding. But even the unused boats were used at one time (probably in the first year after the owner bought it) and those people could be categorized under whatever intent they bought their boat for (did they intend to primarily race or cruise).

When I say racing I'm not thinking of cruisers who are racing another boat that happens to be going their way. When you made plans to go sailing that day, your primary intent in going out probably wasn't to find another boat to race against. By racing I mean people who made plans to take their boat out primarily to race against other boats, and perhaps have an organized crew and a predetermined course or waypoints.

I guess if we include small boats like Optimists that does skew the racing numbers up. But even small boats can be used for non-racing purposes - I'd say taking a dinghy out on a lake or sound and dinking around, maybe heaving to for lunch, has more in common with cruising than racing.

You think people buying boats exclusively for racing is so low as 1%? That's way different than what I would guess. A lot of new boat designs and brokerage boats seem designed very much so for racing.

The Farr 30 world championships just recently took place in our area. I have a hard time believing someone buying a Farr 30 or J/105 isn't buying it primarily for racing. When you say "exclusively" maybe you meant 100% of the time? On that I agree, people rarely buy boats exclusively for any one purpose - but the question is primarily (what is their majority intent), not 100%.
