Re: What kind of paint to use over this plastic nameplate?

Maybe even simpler: Take a good rubbing or tracing of the whole thing to the vinyl place. Tell them you want a sheet of black vinyl, same size, an inch wider all around, and you want the new name on a plastic scrim so you can apply it after you put the NEW BLACK BACKGROUND in place and trim it down with an Xacto knife.

WTF, applied after a good thorough cleaning? It should totally hide the old stuff.

Re: What kind of paint to use over this plastic nameplate?

Having done this many times for both boats and cars, use a heat gun on any vinyl stickers. Just pull off with your finger nails. Then use adhesive remover. If its a water slide on decal, light wet sanding will remove it. Or use a rubber wheel. May have clear coat over it as well. Again light sanding is in order.

If you are painting over plastic, use an adhesion promoter. The paint will stick better without peeling.

Good luck, it should look real nice when you are done!

You can make sanded plastic shiny again by careful use of heat gun,or propane torch. Heat melts the plastic surface I it self levels as it cools.

HelloSailor has the right idea. Just scab over the existing name with either a hard application or even a vinyl sheet.

Don't make it harder than it has to be.

Re: What kind of paint to use over this plastic nameplate?

Well I got in touch with PO and come to find out it is teak that has been painted and sealed with varnish.
So I'm planning to just sand and repaint it.
Thanks everyone for your advice, and I will comb through it again for extra tips before we complete the project.
