Re: What kind of boat to learn on?

If you will be a small lake sailor, I would suggest a daysailor that is sloop rigged. I would suggest an Interlake or Flying Scot type boats. A centerboard makes it easy to trailer and cheap to store. What you need is to polish you sailing skills with a jib. A smaller, lighter boat is less forgiving as things happen faster. A keel boat means a mooring or marina but if you are in an area where you can do a weekend trip/ overnight, you will learn to anchor, navigate and get the flavor of cruising. I feel sailboats and their systems are straight forward. Gps has revolutionized sailing/ cruising. That said if you go to a keel boat, there are many acceptable ones out there but you need a larger body of water to make it worth the expense.

Re: What kind of boat to learn on?

I don't know your area, or lake you will be on but that's the best place to start. Check the marinas and sailing clubs. there could be problems with certain drafts for launching, or size restrictions for a slip. Also a great way to jump the line for a slip to buy from someone already there.
Guaranteed there will be an old sailor who has been there for 30 years that can tell you everything you need to know. Make friends with those guys, you will learn a lot
