What island is your favorite...

I've only visited and lived in the Hawaiian Islands so I can't compare. I'm pretty certain that comments about the Big Island are about the Kona side but I can't be for sure.
The state does not treat cruisers well so this survey has to be land/tourist based.

Stopped off in Kona on our way to Seattle after spending a year and a half cruising French Polynesia. 36 years later we're still here. Still, if we were still cruising would opt for the more remote places like the Marquesas and Tuamotu's over any of the Islands in that survey.

mtang - i think few americans - or anyone else for that matter - know the real story of how hawaii became part of the usa. a truly disgraceful episode in american history and worth being more widely known.

Kauai will always hold a special place in my heart. Surfing the north shore many times in some serious power, spearfishing on the east side, camping at Polihale, hiking up rivers, hiking the Nepali coast, waterfalls everywhere, real aloha, poke, poi, hula, local bruddahs, local wahines. I don't think tourists grasp what Kauai is all about. All da boys where shirts that say unconquered. They are very proud of having never been conquered King Kamehameha or the US. Kauai really is a special paradise.

I happen to like most Islands... some more than others. Long Island where I grew up is too big for my conception of an island. An Island to me... means you have to be constantly aware that you are in fact ON an island... with the sea close by. This is different from living or being by the shore.

Islands are so different it's hard to decide... or put them in order or preference.

And there are hundreds of thousands of them and so who has experience most of them? No one!

I love the eastern Caribbean Islands.. Antigua being a standout along with the Saints.

Maine has the amazing Mt Desert Island

Mass has the Elizabeth Islands, the Vineyard and Nantuckek ad RI has Block and Connnanicut.. and Aquidnick ain't bad either.

The Canaries are another collection of 7 delightful islands...

And Greece is loaded with them

Just as endoftheroad said KW should be on the front of the list, more overnight destinations to sail to from there, interesting people (I know of many) living there and easy to get away from!

Yes, those islands with a road or bridge to them do not really feed isolated during rush hour.

Key West is more of a third world island than an american island.
If you dont believe me take a second look at my grammer and spelling.
But, serioussly KW is closer to a communist country than it is its own mainland.
We have haitians, cubans, hondurans, peruvians, mexicans, bahamians, dominicans, polish (myself), cheks, english, latvia, french, canadian, isralies, iran, pakis, south africans, irish, russians, conchs, pirates, bulgarians, hawaiians, new engalnders, southerners,germans, kiwis, guyana, africa, gays, fugitives and perverts all living here both Legals and Illegals all mostly living in harmony.

official KW slogan is "one human family".

I could quadruple the above list if I wasnt soo lazy (keys disease).

Not to mention my wife is Australian.

The diversity here is intense and the influence is wicked.
