All the San Juans are great!
I just happen to have a thing for Orcas.
Canadians will chime in about the Gulf Islands soon enough. I didn't have time to stop at any, but one of these days....

The Op did ask about Islands in the US - so this Canuck will stick to the request.

San Juan Island - Roche and Friday Harbours are great for different reasons.

But then they should be Canadian, eh? Damn that Wilhelm I.

Re: What island is your favorite...

since the op asked only for US islands, I will respect that. But IF I were going to mention any Canadian Islands, at least the ones near the US San Juans, I might mention Saltspring. And Bowen. And Jededia. Although I've never been, Haida Gwaii is supposed to be the magical place on earth. But I can't actually mention these places, cuz they're not in the US.

I would add Chenega Is, Ak - but then I don't want it to become a tourist destination.

Re: What island is your favorite...

i've been to six of those islands. they're ok, if you're into touristy places. i'd have put key west at #1 back before the 1980's when they built the new highway and bridges and water pipeline.

thankfully, my favorite island isn't on the list and isn't likely to ever be on the list (i hope and pray)....

Re: What island is your favorite...

I have lived on St. Thomas, Tortola, and Kauai. Now living on St. Croix. Also been to many other islands.

Kauai will always hold a special place in my heart. Surfing the north shore many times in some serious power, spearfishing on the east side, camping at Polihale, hiking up rivers, hiking the Nepali coast, waterfalls everywhere, real aloha, poke, poi, hula, local bruddahs, local wahines. I don't think tourists grasp what Kauai is all about. All da boys where shirts that say unconquered. They are very proud of having never been conquered King Kamehameha or the US. Until the Queen was put under house arrest by the US and forced to forfeit the island.

Kauai really is a special paradise.

Re: What island is your favorite...

We really enjoyed sailing in to Hilo, Hawaii. I am told the back of the island is really touristy, but we found the Hilo area to be absolutely charming, bicycle friendly and we got to know several local folks by joining in at a dance competition. It was in a park just a short ride from Radio Bay and to watch some of the older Hawaiian women dance is a treat - you can tell they've been doing it for years and years. We had sailed there from Chile - spent a lot of time at off the beaten track islands on the way so enjoyed the contrast.
