Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
A telescoping boat would be nice, depending on what I'm doing and where.

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
Jim nailed it.
Two of my very favourite yachts are 78' and 23'
and my all time favourite was 20' and I had a half share.
I'd need at least six votes to participate in the poll

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
Can I vote again.......the 0'-19' is a whole lot more fun to sail off the beach than the 35' boat.

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
There was some discussion about how wavelength affected the ideal size. Where you can take your boat is also limited by size. The larger the boat the harder it is to handle, the harder it is on the gear, crew, etc....all of the costs of a boat increase at much greater rate than the length.

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
The ideal length/size/type is the boat that you can afford to purchase/maintain/upgrade, and still have enough money left over to actually sail the boat. If you go too big for your budget/strength/skill ,you are less likely to really go cruising. If you go too small you might have to take sponge bathes in the cockpit and cook on a 2 burner stove without an oven, but you are far more likely to be able to afford to cast off the dock lines. The truth is , that there is no IDEAL BOAT. All boats are a comprimise, and it is usually comfort vs budget. Thats just my 2 cents worth_____Grant.

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
It depends on the design. A 27ft columbia has the space of a 32footer. But as a "standard production boat" ballpark number I would say 35ft-ish for a Bene, jeny cata, hunter etc. But thats just me. Not the next guy.

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
in semi-whimsical reply to gJordan:
Cleaning ovens is not that comfortable, so the 2 burner stove has its compensations..
furthermore "Sponge bathes in the cockpit" can be pretty comfortable, with a solar shower. Rich people's yachts have jacuzzis - what's the diff ?

Re: What is your ideal sailboat length?
Many people answer "the biggest boat you can afford"
My answer would be "the smallest boat which can do what you NEED it to do"

Back when I used to work in the "industry" I would seen people look at the boat they could comfortably afford fully equipped and then buy the next size or two bigger bare bones....be too busy working to pay off the boat and not have it comfortably equipped.....but they had a bigger boat than the other guy.
My boat is big enough to take where ever I want, as well as small enough to go places some people can't. Just a hair under 30' drawing a tad under 5' with a beam of less than 9'....but designed as a singled handed ocean cruiser with enough room for two comfortably.

In a thread about old style narrow boat vs new style wide boats I responded I chose grace over space....and got no argument from anyone.
My boat has an 8'9" beam - 6 1/2" (1" planking, 2"x3" frames, 1/4" ceiling = 3 1/4"/side), my cockpit is 5 1/2' and my lazarette is 4 1/2' (which until I turn it into an aft cabin w/cabin under the cockpit uses up alot of boat). Forward cabin was designed to be used for head, workshop, storage and chain locker (more forward cabin space would mean less deck space and more boat under the water )...so unlike land habitation where a room is dedicated solely to sleeping, my settee in the main cabin pulls out to a double bunk (or single bunk) allowing the main cabin to serve double duty as sleeping quarters at night.
Everything about a boat is a compromise somewhere.....you really only need to impress yourself, it's your boat, your space....you just have to make yourself happy.

Yep me too. I've had several longer boats than my 25er, and several shorter ones. This is about right for one oldtimer whose lost his passion for Polynesia. One burner, no oven. 6 (count 'em 6) opening ports. If the Yanmar dies, I won't need to replace it to get around, It sails well and I've got oars. Sistership has been RTW. Gravity feed tanks. Watercatchers. Whoo hoo.
