Re: what is the furthest North record?

Maybe it is time for those so inclined to set out some "rules" (e.g., water only, sail only?, there and back under own power). Not necessarily onerous, but somehow meaningful, like five capes or 'round Oz. I am sure someone knows the drill for such things. Does not matter to me since I won't be trying it, at least voluntarily. Still I'd like to know who to salute.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

The yacht Tara spent a couple of years locked in the ice doing science, not sure how far north she got. Berserk 3 got a ways north in the NW passage. Northern light got to 80 24.7 N back in the mid 80's

Essential watching here if you what to play with ice!

Re: what is the furthest North record?

thank you for all the replies everyone, glad to see its not just me so fascinated by the cold inhospitable parts of our oceans!

Roger Taylors voyages are incredible, i read about him not to long ago in one of the big sailing magazines, i think it was Yachting World.

I hadnt heard of Northern Lights and their amazing voyages. Here is a a great article about them;

Re: what is the furthest North record?

I made it to 81N.
Not on a sailboat, but a steel ship as the most junior guy onboard, 15 years old and peeling potatoes in the galley for a living.
We made it all the way to the solid ice after stopping at the Norternmost settlement of Ny Ålesund at 79N.
Don't think I would go up there on a sailboat. Too many things could go wrong and it is better in the Bahamas..

Andaj;

If the cold north sounds alluring, you can experience it to see if its for you without going to the extreme. Newfoundland and the east coast of Labrador has it all and can be checked out in a season, in case you end up hating the cold and wanting to head south again. Fjords, icebergs, cold water spraying in your face, not always as romantic as it sounds but has its pleasurable moments!!

But that would only indicate how far north he got in his head, not how far north he physically sailed. I read most of his books 20-25 years ago and found them very entertaining, but as I read, it gradually became clear that they included large swaths of fantasy. But he did have a very good imagination and told a good story.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

I believe it was the year before last, and I recall a solo sailer did the NW passage E-W in a 27 footer, of a type not usually considered for rough sailing. I have no clue as to how far north in got in the process, but it may be worth checking if you are interested.

Wait a few more years. There wont be anymore ice left at all. The budding entrepreneur will soon have an open year round marina operating. There will be readily available uploads for magnetic deviation. You'll be able to sail your plastic cat there ... without a heater. Access to true north is just around the corner.

Not much of an answer to a reasonable question. Please do not preach and please put your money where your mouth should be.

Re: what is the furthest North record?

In 1977 Willy De Roos sailed the North-West passage.

Don't know how far north he sailed.
