What Is a Big Boat

I was doing a search for something and came across a thread about size (boat size). Now the thread was only a couple of years ago, but in that thread I feel what Big was a lot smaller than what we call a big now.

So just when do you consider a boat to be big? Is it 30', 35', 40', 45'.......

I bet it comes down to what your experience is. If you started on a day sailer maybe a 36' boat is huge. But for me who has never even been on a boat less than 33' things seem different.

So do the poll but go at it, without trashing others definition of what size is a big boat.

Re: What is a Big boat

For me anything over 42 challenges me in modern big volume designs. Older designs, with less volume 50foot

I think a mid 80s Morgan 43 CC has a bath tub. Only 1 foot less than yours, so I understand your boat size choice now.

Anything bigger than mine.

Though mine is one of the smallest "complete" cats around when the folks at work ask and are told, their eyes get wide. Explaining it is small for it's type does no good.

I know a big boat when I see it. This is a big boat:

Here's looking at it from standing on the dock:

Re: What is a Big boat

One of the things I used in my choice for "big" was that at a certain length I don't feel anything is gained. Since I plan there will just be my wife and I don't need all the extra space for others. I even noticed that galleries and salons don't really have any more usable space after around 45'.

Re: What is a Big boat

At one point in my life, I thought that anything with a bolted-down toilet was HUGE.

(I've noticed, though, that big boats tend to shrink a bit once you're out of sight of land.)

LOL I do know that sound having one that blends in with the carpet at home. Right now we only sail with a 60# dog. She does fill a lot of space. Right now we are still working towards a dream of long distance cruising but do spend spare time gone. I'm not sure how carpet cat will adjust to boat life but if given little choice he will when the time comes.
