Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

I pulled a whole tree up under my boat last year. Lake sailing. Dropped anchor for the night, caught some 40 mph winds off the mountains but held on firmly....

Next morning as I was hoisting the anchor it seemed to be stuck, so we tried several things to get it to come up... no windless since the boat is small, I was only in about 8 feet of water but can't see bottom.

Suddenly as the chain was coming up, I heard a THUMP on the aft end. I looked around and huge log hit the boat. I kept pulling and the other end of the log came up haha.

Since I wasn't too far from shore I gave the log a shove off and it came to rest against the sand. I let some rangers know and alerted the marina when I went into to tow the boat out of the water

Apparently the old tree was under the mud for a long time and when I pulled, it finally floated free

By the way, I carry a set of large bolt cutters on board.

To those who want the coordinates in Newport harbor: I just checked this after traveling to Japan (yes I was there a few days earlier) and will dig them out and post them here.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

While cruising with a friend on the Firth of Forth between Inchcolm Island and Braefoot Bay we anchored to visit the Cistercian monastary, and when we picked it up it was HEAVY... We managed to winch it clear of the surface and found that we'd picked up a lead sheathed electric cable. We managed to pass a rope around it, dropped and retrieved the anchor, then dropped the cable, but a little scary since we didn't know if the cable was 'hot'. Later we hunted out some old maps from the local library that showed it to be a disused cable from the second World War feeding the military camp there at that time. Wish we'd marked it, it might have had some scrap value.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

About 20yrs ago I had anchored in the little bay between Nanaimo and Newcastle Island to spend the night. The following morning retrieving the anchor was all I could handle using the largest winch aboard and all my strength I discovered it was hung up on a huge crab pot, the kind used by the comercial boats on "Deadliest Catch". I was single handed and it took the better part of the morning to get loose from it. I have no idea why it was there.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

a few yrs ago, we were riding out a hurricane at anchor in key west..the second anchor popped out but the primary held like glue. when we were ready to leave, we couldn't budge the anchor..finally after spinning in circles over the anchor it finally popped. don't know what was down there, but we're real glad it was there...

Snagged a sunke Buoy in False Creek some years ago on my charter yacht. Fought for hrs to get my Anchor free and endet up gaining another abandoned Anchor also snagged on the same Buoy.

Wife and Doughter dident mind as the got some extra shopping time in.

Quite an experience but would do it again.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

This isn't very exotic, but it's the only time I was close to cutting the anchor free: we had anchored to do a little fishing off Hatchett Reef on the Connecticut coast, and we got snagged but good. Kept heaving up the anchor, and it only served to sink the bow. Kept cleating it off an inch more, hoping to slowly lift it, but no dice. Motored circles, etc. Heaved and heaved and cursed. Spent about an hour at it, and was getting ready to say goodbye to my anchor, when it started to slowly rise. Up came a ball of kelp about 2 or 3 feet across. It was a clump that had been rooted strong to the bottom and we had to break it out, apparently.

Only place I found a snagged anchor: while snorkeling for mussels in Cocktail Cove, Jewell Island, Maine. It was wedged good into a rock ledge. Unfortunately, it was only a Danforth, and not the Rocna I was hoping for.

Best blackfish spearing I ever found: off the Provincetown breakwater. It's like a blackfish aquarium there.

Dropped my anchor on the mast once... Of another yacht that sunk recently on same spot. Got anchor tangled up in the rigging. One of my crew, being young and foolishly brave at the time freedived down 6 meters with wire cutters. Took him about 10 dives to cut us loose but the anchor was saved.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

We weighed anchor in Awendaw Creek and pulled up a $500 Danforth anchor that someone had abandoned.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

Picked up this beauty of a lobster pot at Fishers Island, NY in WestHarbor.
Had to pry it off with a boat hook.

Re: What Have You Snagged Your Anchor on ?

Had to cut one away (almost new) from a 23' Center console after fishing over a wreck. I guess I anchored right on it.

Later a diver told me he regularly dives these wrecks and sells lots of anchors.

Walking the sand bar at low tide just north of Anclote Key I found a piece of nylon rope sticking out of the sand. I pulled it and pulled it and kept that up for a long way. It got deeper and deeper. I finally dug up ten feet of heavy chain and a huge Danforth - slightly bent.

Once in Gulfport, Fl had my secondary anchor rope wrap around and old crab trap and cut itself off. Free dove down the primary (all chain) rode and found the secondary had wrapped around it after the trap, so had an easy recovery.

Later I had a danforth pull up in a storm and the boat dragged a mile down the Manatee River before running aground. When I pulled the anchor up I found that it had gone into a plastic milk crate, which I think I still have and use to store spare anchor line.

There is currently a big rope (actually multiple ropes tied together) wrapped around my anchor chain. Not sure how it creeps up the chain to the surface but I've caught it a couple times now. Nothing but marine growth on it all the way to the other end.
