Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?

DOJ's hat in post 5. I think this one that will best at reducing the chance of skin cancer.

Agreed David, but they look so dorky .

Actually, I don't like them b/c they're no good in rain, and I hate the enclosed feeling. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?

I'm another pink skinned Irish Australian - and cover up - shade and bimini - lng sleeve's etc.
I like the hat/balaclava in Dave's post.
presently I have genuine imitation Indiana Jones hat - bought from the museum of natural history in NYC - does the trick and has strap.
but, there is mucho reflection from the water - so still need sun-screen - modern zinc is best - blends better than regular and "apparently" less toxic stuff...

They do look a bit Middle-Eastern. But maybe they have it right and us Westerners have it wrong?

In the rain you generally don't have to worry about the sun.

I like the Barmah hats - especially the ones with the mesh sides to keep your brain from cooking. Only issue is that they don't float, so if you jump in the water, make sure your have you hand on it!

This looks really good oldjags. How stiff is the brim? Will it stay in place when facing a decent wind (15-20knt)?

I wear an Australian Outback Drifter in wet weather and Henschel wide brim in the sun. I remember standing in the freezing rain in my Drifter w iccles hanging off the brim, Ugh.

Mike,

The brim on mine isn't real stiff, as it's a foldable hat, but I wouldn't say it's floppy either. I don't have any problem with the brim flopping around in a stiff breeze. I worry more about the hat blowing off entirely.

Lit. on the website says the brim has a stainless steel spring in the edge of the brim - maybe that's why it doesn't flop in the breeze.

For some reason, some of the ladies versions have a chin strap to help hold them in place, but the men's versions don't.

Both my wife and I have one. The mesh sides let the breeze blow right through and keep your head cool.

Tilley -
I'm on my fourth or fifth. I keep leaving them somewhere so I now have one for a spare. Floppy brim doesn't bother me.

Fair enuf.

But just to say, they seem to be made in various materials (and colours - desk camo is kinda growing on me )............. They may look dorky, but you don't have to look at it

Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?

I wear a Tilley I bought in Apalachicola in 2006 it is still in good shape, when it gets dirty I bring it in the shower and wash it. Just wear the chin strap in the wind. The log billed caps with the neck shade in back by Columbia are good too, that is what I usually wear fishing.
